Welcome to Cartagena, Colombia—a vibrant city and a historic gem on the Caribbean coast that will captivate you with its colonial charm, rich history, and breathtaking scenery. Also known as Cartagena de Indias, this beautiful city is a perfect place to immerse yourself in culture, wander through picturesque streets, and soak up the tropical atmosphere. The heart of Cartagena is its Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and grand plazas tell the story of its past. Beyond the city’s stone walls, the lively neighborhood of Getsemaní offers a more bohemian vibe with its street art and buzzing nightlife, while the nearby Rosario Islands have crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches.
In this travel guide, I’ll take you through all my favorite things in Cartagena—from exploring historic landmarks and vibrant neighborhoods to discovering the best restaurants, beautiful beaches, and must-do experiences. Whether you’re strolling along the city walls, enjoying delicious Caribbean cuisine, or watching the sunset over the sea, this guide will help you make the most of your time in this unforgettable destination.

GETTING TO CARTAGENA
If it’s your first time visiting Cartagena de Indias, you’ll be happy to know that getting here is easier than you might think. The best way to reach this beautiful city is by air, with direct flights available from several major cities in the U.S., as well as connections from Europe and other parts of South America.
If you’re visiting from the United States, there are direct flights to Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) from cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, and Houston. These flights are usually around 3 to 5 hours, making Cartagena an easy getaway. If you’re flying from other U.S. cities, you may need a quick layover in Bogotá, Panama City, or Medellín before arriving in Cartagena.
For those coming from Europe, there are no direct flights to Cartagena, but the most common route is flying into Bogotá (El Dorado International Airport) and then taking a short domestic flight to Cartagena, which takes about 1.5 hours. Many European travelers also connect through Madrid, Miami, or Panama City.
If you’re traveling from South America, there are frequent flights from cities like Lima, Quito, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires, often with layovers in Bogotá or Panama City.
Once you arrive at Rafael Núñez International Airport, be prepared for a long and slow-moving customs line. It can take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes to clear immigration, so if you have plans shortly after landing, be sure to account for the extra time. After clearing customs, you’re just a 15–20 minute taxi ride from the old town of Cartagena and Getsemaní, where most people choose to stay. Uber is widely available and affordable, our ride was only $7.
GETTING AROUND CARTAGENA
Cartagena is a relatively small and walkable city, especially if you’re staying in the Old City or Getsemaní. The narrow streets lined with colorful colonial buildings make walking a very enjoyable experience, and it’s a great way to soak in the city’s atmosphere. However, with the heat and humidity, you may not always feel like walking—and that’s where Uber comes in! Uber is extremely popular and readily available in Cartagena. We never had to wait more than two minutes for a ride, making it a great way to get around quickly. Aside from our $7 ride from the airport, nearly every trip within the city cost just $2–$3, making it an affordable and comfortable option, especially on those scorching hot days.
Taxis are also available, but they don’t use meters, so you’ll need to negotiate the price beforehand. If you’re looking for the best way to explore Cartagena, Uber is the most convenient and budget-friendly choice.
CARTAGENA TRAVEL TIPS
SAFETY
Cartagena is a safe place, and has been for years. As a female traveler, I felt extremely safe—probably safer than in most major European cities. There is a visible police presence, especially in touristy areas like the Old City, Getsemaní, and Bocagrande, which adds to the sense of security. That said, it’s always a good idea to take basic precautions. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying valuables that might draw attention. As in most places, stay aware of your surroundings, avoid dark alleys, and be mindful of pickpockets in crowded areas. Steer clear of anyone offering drugs or anything illegal (including prostitution), and always opt for bottled water instead of tap.
As long as you use common sense and stay mindful, Cartagena is a safe place to explore, and you’ll have an amazing time!
CURRENCY
Cartagena’s currency is the Colombian Peso (COP), but you have lots of options when it comes to payments. Restaurants, hotels, and shops accept credit cards. However, tipping is encouraged and usually preferred in cash—whether in Colombian Pesos, US Dollars, or Euros. While many places accept foreign currency, it’s always a good idea to carry some pesos for small purchases, taxis, and street vendors. ATMs and money exchange kiosks can be found throughout the city, especially in tourist areas. Just be mindful of exchange rates and possible fees.
LANGUAGE
Spanish is the official language of Cartagena. In hotels and some restaurants, you’ll find staff who speak English, but in some local restaurants and among locals, English is limited to basic phrases. If you don’t speak Spanish, Google Translate is your best friend. It’s helpful for reading menus, asking for directions, or having simple conversations. Learning a few key Spanish phrases, like “gracias” (thank you) and “la cuenta, por favor” (the check, please), can go a long way and is always appreciated by locals.
STREET VENDORS
Some of the most common vendors you’ll see are those selling hats, sunglasses, and handmade crafts—especially in the Old City and Getsemaní.
You’ll also come across the Palenqueras, the women dressed in traditional bright-colored attire carrying fruit baskets on their heads. They are happy to pose for photos, and while our tour guide suggested tipping $1, we gave more.
Another common sight is “street rappers” who will freestyle as you walk by. If you stop to listen or engage with them, they will expect a tip.
While street performances and vendors are part of Cartagena’s vibe, some can be persistent—but a polite “no, gracias” is enough—they are respectful and will leave you alone.
WHEN TO VISIT CARTAGENA
DECEMBER- ARIL (Dry Season)
High season in Cartagena runs from December to April, which is the dry season. This is the BEST time to visit, with plenty of sunny days, clear skies, lower humidity. Temperatures average around 29°C (85°F) making it perfect for outdoor activities and beach excursions. Since this is the peak season, you’ll find a lively atmosphere but also higher prices and more tourists—so plan ahead!
MAY – NOVEMBER (Rainy Season)
Avoid as this is Cartagena’s rainy season, with unpredictable weather and frequent heavy downpours. High humidity and wet conditions can make outdoor activities less enjoyable, and there’s also a risk of flooding, which may make getting around more challenging.
HOW MANY DAYS IN CARTAGENA
3-4 Days is the sweet spot for visiting Cartagena. It gives you enough time to explore the best places the city has to offer, including the historic walled city, the colorful streets of Getsemaní, and nearby attractions like the Rosario Islands.
In these few days, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture, enjoy delicious local cuisine, and relax at the beach along the stunning Caribbean Sea. With a perfect balance of sightseeing, cultural experiences, and downtime, 3-4 days is ideal for experiencing everything Cartagena has to offer.
WHERE TO STAY IN CARTAGENA

Hotel Boutique Casona del Colegio is a stylish hotel in the perfect location, right in the heart of Cartagena’s historic district. Casa Pestagua Relais Châteaux is a luxury hotel located in a beautifully restored 17th-century mansion in Cartagena’s historic center. The hotel has colonial architecture, 11 unique suites and rooms decorated with antique furniture and high ceilings. You can relax in a rooftop hydromassage tub, work out at the fitness center, and enjoy Caribbean dishes at the on-site restaurant. Located just steps from Santo Domingo square, it’s perfectly positioned for exploring the city’s local attractions.
Hotel Casa Don Luis is a charming boutique hotel in Cartagena’s historic Walled City. The hotel has a beautiful colonial-style architecture with high ceilings and a grand staircase. There is an outdoor pool, a spa, and an Italian restaurant on-site. Plus, it’s conveniently located near popular attractions like San Felipe de Barajas Castle and the Palace of the Inquisition.
Hotel Casona del Porvenir is a charming property set in the heart of Cartagena’s historic district. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial building, it offers 13 elegant rooms that blend classic design with modern comforts, with exceptional attention to detail and personalized service. There is an outdoor pool, a spa, and a restaurant serving delicious Caribbean cuisine. Its peaceful yet central location makes it easy to explore nearby attractions, restaurants, and bars.

Casa Claver Loft is a stunning boutique hotel in Cartagena’s historic center. Set in a restored 17th-century building, it features gorgeous design and exceptional service. The Elegant Apartment Ocean is a beautifully renovated, spacious 2-bedroom beachfront apartment with stunning ocean views. It includes two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a comfortable living area. You will have access to amenities such as a rooftop pool, sauna, and free private parking. Its in a prime location near Bocagrande Beach.
OSH Hotel Cartagena is a modern lifestyle hotel located in the vibrant Getsemaní neighborhood. The hotel has 138 rooms and designed with a unique personality to cater to diverse guest preferences. Amenities include two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, a restaurant, and a bar. The hotel’s prime location offers easy access to local attractions, restaurants, and shops.
MUST VISIT PLACES IN CARTAGENA
ROSARIO ISLANDS
A day trip to the Rosario Islands is an absolute must when visiting Cartagena! Sail across the Caribbean Sea on a catamaran, group boat, or private tour for the ultimate beach escape. This was hands down one of the best days of our trip! We spent the morning sailing and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters before stopping at Bora Bora Beach Club, where we relaxed, enjoyed a delicious lunch, and took a refreshing swim. We chose a private boat tour and couldn’t recommend it more—the company was incredibly responsive, accommodating, and made the entire experience seamless!
OLD TOWN
The Old Town of Cartagena is the heart of the city and one of the best places to explore its rich history and colonial charm. Surrounded by well-preserved fortress walls, this area is filled with narrow streets, colorful colonial buildings, and beautiful plazas. Strolling through Old Town feels like stepping back in time, with horse-drawn carriages, lively cafés, and street vendors adding to the atmosphere. One of the must-visit places here is Plaza Santo Domingo, where you can admire the famous Gertrudis sculpture by Fernando Botero and enjoy outdoor dining at one of the many restaurants. Plaza de la Aduana, the largest square in the city, is another highlight, showcasing stunning colonial architecture. Don’t miss the Clock Tower Gate (Torre del Reloj), the main entrance to the walled city, which is an iconic symbol of Cartagena.
GETSEMANÍ
Getsemaní is one of the most vibrant and artistic neighborhoods in Cartagena de Indias, known for its incredible street art that tells the story of the city’s history, culture, and resilience. Once a working-class area, it has transformed into a trendy hotspot filled with colorful murals created by artists. As you walk through its streets, you’ll find walls covered in stunning artwork, from large-scale murals to smaller hidden gems that reflect the spirit of the community. You’ll also come across local artisans selling handmade jewelry, woven hammocks, pottery, and embroidered clothing in small shops and markets, making it a great place to find unique, handcrafted souvenirs.
CASTLE SAN FELIPE DE BARAJAS
Castle San Felipe de Barajas is one of Cartagena’s most iconic landmarks, built in the 1600s by the Spanish to defend against pirates and invaders. This massive fortress is filled with tunnels, hidden passageways, and towering walls that showcase its strategic importance. Since Cartagena gets extremely hot, visiting early in the morning or late afternoon is a good idea. It’s walking distance, about a 20-minute walk from the Old Town or 13 minutes from Getsemaní, but you can also take a quick and affordable Uber. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the walk to the top offers incredible panoramic views!
BEST THINGS TO DO IN CARTAGENA
SUNSET AT MOVICH HOTEL
If you want one of the best sunset views in Cartagena, Movich Hotel rooftop bar is the place to be. It has an incredible panoramic view of the Old Town, the Caribbean Sea, and the city skyline. Since it’s one of the most popular spots, they have a strict capacity limit, and people show up early. You’ll need to arrive at least 2-3 hours before sunset to get in—otherwise, they’ll turn you away. It’s worth the wait, though! Grab a drink, find a good spot, and enjoy watching the sky change colors over the city.
Ábaco Libros y Café
COFFEE IN CARTAGENA
Since you’re in Colombia, the land of amazing coffee, you have to try some while you’re here! There are plenty of great spots, but these were our favorite places:
- Ábaco Libros y Café – A cozy bookstore and café, perfect for a quiet coffee break.
- Época Café Bar – A must-visit espresso bar known for its rich Colombian coffee.
- Café San Alberto Cartagena – One of the best places to experience premium Colombian coffee.
FRESH SEAFOOD
Cartagena is known for its incredibly fresh and flavorful seafood, so make sure to indulge while you’re here! I was practically living on their delicious ceviche for lunch and dinner—it’s that good. Whether you’re dining at a beachfront restaurant or grabbing a bite from a local spot, you’ll find amazing seafood dishes made with the freshest catch of the day.
STREET FOOD TOUR
A guided street food tour is one of the best ways to experience Cartagena’s local food scene while learning about its rich culture. Led by a local guide, you’ll visit 9-10 vendors and sample some of the best street food in the city, including savory empanadas, fresh fruit, delicious cold coffee, and many other mouthwatering dishes. Each stop gives you a taste of Colombia’s diverse gastronomy. The tour takes you through the beautiful Walled City, where you’ll not only enjoy amazing food but also get a deeper understanding of the history and culinary traditions that make Cartagena’s street food scene so special.

If you’re looking for a truly memorable dining experience, Celele is a must-visit. They serve modern Colombian cuisine with a unique twist, and the way they use local ingredients is so creative. The presentation of each dish is stunning, and the service is really on point too.
Has a laid back brunchy vibe. The decor is super fun and beautiful—think Miami-inspired with bright colors and a relaxed, airy feel. It’s a great spot to unwind, enjoy a cup of coffee, and have a casual bite while enjoying the local atmosphere.
Carmen Cartagena is another stylish restaurant that blends traditional Colombian and international flavors with a modern twist. The ambiance is vibrant, with tons of green plants and contemporary design, and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs work their magic. The menu focuses on fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the service is top-notch. We came here for our last dinner in Cartagena, and it was the perfect choice for a memorable dining experience. They have great cocktails too!
La Cevicheria is a must for seafood lovers. Known for its fresh ceviche, the restaurant has a ton of delicious, refreshing dishes with a Caribbean twist. The cozy, casual setting is perfect for a laid-back meal, and the vibrant flavors of the ceviche make it stand out.
BUENA VIDA MARISQUERÍA
Buena Vida Marisquería is a must-visit if you’re craving fresh seafood in Cartagena. We came here for lunch and were blown away by the delicious, locally sourced seafood dishes. From perfectly prepared fish and shrimp to their signature ceviches, every dish bursts with flavor. Located in a chic spot with a roof terrace, they offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the laid-back vibe paired with attentive service makes it a great place to relax. With live music adding to the atmosphere, it’s a fantastic spot to enjoy both great food and a lively experience.
