Staying inside the medieval walls puts you right in the heart of Dubrovnik’s history and charm. You’ll be just steps from Stradun, the main street, with cafés, restaurants, and landmarks all around you. It’s very atmospheric and the most popular place to stay in Dubrovnik.

Just keep in mind that cars aren’t allowed inside and there are a lot of stairs. I think staying inside the Old Town is perfect for first-time visitors.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Old Town: Dominus Rooms

This little boutique, family-run hotel is right in the heart of Old Town Dubrovnik. Dominus Rooms is located on a narrow street with stairs, which I think just adds to the charm. Plus, the reception staff was so lovely and took the time to explain everything when we arrived.

After checking in, our room was actually in a separate building. It had modern amenities and beautiful old stone walls, which made the entire area feel really cozy. The bathroom was huge, and there was also daily housekeeping. Overall, if you want to be in the perfect location, this is the best area to stay in Dubrovnik.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Old Town: SUNce Palace Apartments

These incredible apartments are right in the center of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. This is the perfect location if you want to be close to everything. The building itself is beautiful and historic, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and it’s super clean. 

SUNce Palace Apartments also has parking, but it’s off-site as no cars are allowed in Old Town. Overall, this is a great place to stay in Ducrivnik if you want space and to be right in the middle of the city.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Old Town: The Pucic Palace

This is a gorgeous 5-star hotel right inside the Old Town. It is located in an 18th-century Baroque palace and is just a 2 minute walk from Stradun, the main road. The Pucić Palace has a ton of romantic touches, stone walls, and elegant decor that make staying here feel exclusive.

In addition, there’s a restaurant and wine bar, plus a free cooked-to-order breakfast. Staying here feels authentic; you can wake up to the sounds of the local market right outside your window. Staying just outside of the city walls is a perfect area if you want to be close to the Old Town but not sleep inside the busy walls. Hotels here are larger, some with pools and spas, and it’s easy to walk into the Old Town within minutes. It’s a great choice if you want convenience, comfort, and easy access to the main attraction of Dubrovnik.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Outside the Walls: Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

This is a luxurious and elegant five-star hotel just outside Pile Gate (main entrance to Old Town). And a truly great stay in Dubrovnik if you want easy access to the Old Town but without the crowds of the medieval walls. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik has an indoor pool, spa, garden, a restaurant, and free breakfast. Rooms are spacious and modern, many with city or sea views.

Although this hotel is on the higher price range, it’s perfect if you want luxury and comfort while still being only steps away from the main attraction of Dubrovnik.

This is a more relaxed part of Dubrovnik. Lapad has beautiful beaches, a seaside promenade, and resort-style hotels. It’s a good fit for families or if you’re just looking for space and a quieter atmosphere. The Old Town is only a 10-minute drive, so it balances relaxation with easy trips into the city.

Located on a peninsula a little farther out, Babin Kuk has big resorts, beaches, and lots of room to spread out. It’s more peaceful compared to the Old Town. This area works well if you want an all-inclusive or family-friendly stay in Dubrovnik. On the plus side, it’s still only about 15 minutes from the Old Town by car.

When is the Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik?

Choosing the right time to visit can really shape your Dubrovnik experience. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:

April, May, September and October: Shoulder Season 

The shoulder season is a great time to visit. The weather is still warm and sunny, but the crowds are smaller compared to the summer months. You’ll have enough time to enjoy the city without feeling rushed, and it’s easier to find tables at restaurants and explore popular sites like the City Walls and Lokrum Island without the peak season hustle.

June – August: Peak Season

The summer months are the busiest in Dubrovnik, with long days, hot weather, and lots of tourists. During this time, the city is at its liveliest, but also the most crowded and expensive. If you visit during this time, plan to start your sightseeing early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and big crowds. You’ll want to book hotels, restaurants, and cable car tickets well in advance.

November – March: Off-season

The off-season is much quieter with fewer crowds, and some attractions, shops, and restaurants may close or have limited hours. However, if you’re not a fan of crowds and don’t mind cooler weather, this can be a quiet time to explore the Old Town. Just keep in mind that swimming spots and boat trips like might not be available during these months.

How to get around Dubrovnik?

The best way to get around Dubrovnik, especially the old town, is on foot. The Old Town is compact, and most of the main sights are within walking distance. You really don’t need public transport to explore the city center. The stone streets, narrow alleyways, and scenic viewpoints are best enjoyed by walking.

You’ll likely enter through Pile Gate, but there’s also Ploče Gate on the opposite side, which leads you to the eastern entrance of Old Town and the outer walls. Both gates are easy walking routes that connect you to the city’s main attractions.

Public buses are available if you’re staying further out, but once you’re inside the Old Town, walking is the easiest and most enjoyable way to see Dubrovnik.

Is Dubrovnik safe to visit?

In my experience, Dubrovnik felt like one of the safest places I’ve ever visited. It’s the kind of city where people leave their bags and belongings on the beach without worrying. I didn’t see or hear of any pickpockets, which is very different from places like Rome and Paris, where you always have to be cautious.

Everyone we met in Dubrovnik was so friendly and welcoming. The city is also extremely clean—the streets almost sparkle! There’s no trash or litter lying around, and the whole place feels very well cared for.

If you’re worried about safety, Dubrovnik is a destination where you can relax and truly enjoy without constantly being on guard.

Language, do I need to speak Croatian?

You don’t need to worry about speaking Croatian when visiting Dubrovnik. Most people speak English very well, and we never had any language barrier during our trip. In restaurants, shops, and even small local places, communication was always easy.

That said, it’s always respectful to learn a few basic Croatian phrases like “hello” (bok), “thank you” (hvala), and “goodbye” (doviđenja). Locals really appreciate when visitors make a small effort to use their language.

Are there Good Beaches in Dubrovnik?

Absolutely! Dubrovnik is surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, so you’ll always find amazing places to swim.

There are so many beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters. Some are right next to the city walls, little coves tucked under cliffs, and scenic spots just steps from the Old Town. Others are a bit further out along the coast if you’re up for exploring beyond the city center. Even with just 1 day in Dubrovnik, you can still enjoy time at the beach.

One thing to note is that most beaches here are pebbly, not sandy, so I highly recommend bringing water shoes. But the crystal-clear water makes it impossible to stay away, especially on a hot day!
