A Little Bit About Lucern

Lucerne is considered one of the most beautiful towns in central Switzerland and is worth exploring beyond just the Christmas markets. Located on the shore of Lake Lucerne, with the Alps as a perfect backdrop, the town is a blend of medieval history and postcard-perfect scenery.
Lucerne’s old town has colorful frescoed historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and the famous Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) with a 14th-century tower. This is one of the most photographed places in Switzerland. You’ll also see historic city walls, charming squares, and many cafés where you can warm up when it’s cold outside.
What I love about Lucerne is how compact it is. You can easily walk from the lakefront to the old town in just a few minutes. During the winter months, especially around the holiday season, everything feels extra cozy with the glow of Christmas lights reflecting off the water. It’s the kind of place where history, culture, and winter magic come together.

How to Get to Lucerne

It’s easy to reach Lucerne by public transportation. Most people arrive at the main railway station, which is right in the middle of the city and close to the Christmas markets.
Trains run often from Zurich, Basel, and Bern. You can buy a regular ticket at the station or online, and getting a return journey is simple if you plan to go back the same day.
Once you’re in Lucerne, it’s easy to walk around. You can also use buses or boats if you want to see more of the lake or the mountains nearby.
Must Visit Christmas Markets in Lucerne

Visiting Lucerne during the Christmas season is one of the best things you can do in Switzerland. Starting in late November, the entire city comes alive with Christmas spirit! If you are not staying in Lucerne, getting here is easy. The train station is right in the center of the city.
What I love most is how the markets are located between historic buildings, each one shining with what looks like to be fairy lights. It reminds me a bit of the festive Advent atmosphere of Zurich, but on a smaller and cozier scale.
In this section, I will guide you through the must visit Christmas Markets in Lucerne and show you the best places to enjoy the season.
1 – Explore the Franziskanerplatz Christmas Market

The main Christmas market in Lucerne is the Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt at Franziskanerplatz, right in the heart of the Old Town. It is surrounded by historic buildings, with the Franciscan Church as a backdrop. The scene feels straight out of a storybook.
There are many rows of wooden food stalls that serve warm drinks and delicious treats like raclette, sausages, and gingerbread. You will also find booths selling traditional handicrafts and holiday gifts. The entire square is decorated with glowing Christmas trees, and festive music plays in the background, creating a cozy Advent atmosphere.
One of the highlights is the largest Advent wreath in central Switzerland. At over three meters wide, decorated with hundreds of twinkling lights, baubles, and four-meter-high candles, it’s an incredible sight and the centerpiece of the market.
2 – Shop the Weinmarkt Handwerksmarkt Craft Market
The Weinmarkt Handwerksmarkt is one of smaller markets, but it’s an amazing place if you want unique gifts. You’ll find handicrafts and artisan stalls with beautifully made items, from wooden toys to handmade ornaments. It feels more personal, set in the historic Weinmarkt square.
This market is perfect for finding specialized gifts that you won’t find at the larger markets.

Lucerne has been named one of the European Best Destinations, and the markets here really show off Lucerne’s winter magic. To make the most of your visit, here are some tips:
Best Time to Go
The markets usually open in the afternoon, but they’re at their prettiest in the evening when the lights shine against pretty historic buildings. Weekdays are calmer, and weekends bring more energy and crowds.
What to Eat & Drink
Warm up with a glass of Glühwein (hot spiced wine) or try a fruity punch. Be sure to try Swiss favorites like raclette, fondue, gingerbread, and roasted chestnuts; these are the flavors that make the Christmas season special.
What to Buy
Lucerne Craft Market is perfect for gifts. Look for local handicrafts, woodwork, ornaments, and cozy textiles. Many of the stalls are run by artisans, so every purchase supports local work.
Atmosphere
Part of the fun is just enjoying the mood, the Christmas lights, carols, and live music create a magical backdrop. Some markets even have ice-skating or small shows, adding to the festive vibe.
Pair with Other Activities
Make your trip even better by combining the markets with a walk through the Old Town, a lake cruise, or a mountain excursion to Pilatus, Rigi, or Titlis. Concerts in the churches also add a beautiful holiday touch.
Getting Around
Lucerne is easy to explore on foot, and public transportation is excellent if you want to add day trips to nearby mountains or lakes. Most markets are within walking distance of each other and the train station, making it simple to see them all.
