I honestly think Montreux in winter is worth visiting because it has some of the best experiences around. One of the highlights is the Christmas market, and seeing the Flying Santa Claus glide through the sky is such a fun memory to bring home.
Montreux is also located in the heart of French-speaking Switzerland, giving the town a unique vibe compared to other parts of the country. Plus, it’s close to the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you can easily add wine and culture to your snowy getaway.

The Montreux Christmas Market (Montreux Noël) is the main event of Montreux in winter. I think it’s also the best Christmas market in the area. Located along the shores of Lake Geneva, the market shines with over 150 wooden chalets, bright Christmas lights, and the snowy Swiss Alps in the background. The entire atmosphere feels magical, like stepping into a holiday postcard.

What Makes Christmas Noël Special?
What I love most about Montreux Noël is how many activities there are for all ages. You can walk along the lakeside promenade, sip mulled wine, or have snacks like fondue, roasted chestnuts, waffles, and bratwurst. It’s also the perfect place for holiday shopping, with stalls selling handcrafted gifts, ornaments, local products, and unique souvenirs you won’t find anywhere else.
And the highlight? Every evening, the Flying Santa Claus glides a few times across the sky above the market. It’s such a fun and unforgettable moment that adds to the magic of the atmosphere.

When I think of Montreux, I don’t just picture the lakeside promenade. The Old Town is where you truly feel the history and charm. Up on the hillside, cobblestone streets wind past colorful houses and small squares that seem untouched by time. From there, I had some of the best views of Lake Geneva and the snowy mountain peaks.
The Old Town dates back to medieval times, and you can still find evidence of this in the details. The old houses, narrow alleys, and the Church of Saint Vincent with its stained-glass windows and amazing viewpoint all tell a story.
What I love about Montreux’s Old Town is the contrast. One of the best ways to enjoy it is with a leisurely walk. Down by the water, you have the busy promenade and Christmas market, but just a short climb up, it turns into a peaceful neighborhood. You can stop at a small café and enjoy the quiet side of the town before heading back down to the lakeside lights.
3 – See the Statue of Freddie Mercury
One of the most iconic sights in Montreux is the Statue of Freddie Mercury, which is right on the lakeside promenade. It’s a tribute to the legendary Queen singer, who spent a lot of time here and even recorded music in town.

I stopped here during a walk along the promenade while exploring the Christmas markets, and it really felt like one of those must-visit spots that shows Montreux’s creative side.

For Queen fans, Montreux is extra special because the band recorded several albums here. How to Get There: You can take the bus from the main train station in Montreux, or take a train to Veytaux-Chillon, which drops you right near the entrance. If you enjoy walking, a nice option is a leisurely walk along the lakeside promenade. This walk takes around 45 minutes and has beautiful views the whole way. In summer, you can also get there by boat, which makes the trip even more scenic.
7 – Take a Day Trip to Glacier 3000
From Montreux, you can easily visit Glacier 3000 for a day, and it’s a winter experience you won’t forget. After reaching the base, you’ll take a cable car up into the mountains. The views along the way are absolutely stunning. The highlight is the Peak Walk by Tissot, the only suspension bridge in the world that connects two mountain peaks.
When I first stepped onto the bridge, it felt a little scary. But, as I kept walking, it turned into an exciting and surreal experience. Along the way, I also saw many people skiing and snowboarding, which added to the lively atmosphere at the top. There is also a super cute and cozy restaurant.

8 – Take the Cogwheel Train to Rochers-de-Naye
From Montreux, you can take the cogwheel train right at the main train station. It goes all the way up to Rochers-de-Naye, which sits at over 2,000 meters and is the highest point above the town.
The ride is fun, the little red train travels through villages, forests, and snowy slopes until you reach the summit. In winter, the views of Lake Geneva and the Alps are amazing. You can also go skiing, snowshoeing, or just enjoy the mountain scenery.
Pro Tip: The ride takes about an hour each way. It is perfect for a half-day trip from Montreux.

9 – Plan a Ski Trip from Montreux
Montreux isn’t a ski town itself, but it’s a great base if you want to add a ski trip to your winter itinerary. A short drive or train ride will take you to a few ski resorts in the Vaud and Valais regions, perfect for a day in the snow.
One of the closest options is Rochers-de-Naye, where you can take the cogwheel train directly from Montreux to a small ski area that offers amazing views over Lake Geneva. Another nearby place is Les Avants, a charming village that was actually one of Switzerland’s very first ski resorts. Today it’s known for family-friendly skiing, snowshoeing, and a long toboggan, ideal if you want a fun, relaxed day outdoors.
For larger resorts, visit Leysin or Villars-sur-Ollon. Both have wide runs, family-friendly slopes, and sunny mountain terraces. If you don’t mind traveling a bit farther, the famous Verbier and Portes du Soleil ski areas are also accessible.
10 – Dine at a Traditional Swiss Restaurant
A visit to Montreux in winter isn’t complete without warming up in a cozy Swiss restaurant. This is the perfect place to try classic dishes like cheese fondue, raclette, or rösti. These hearty meals are ideal after a cold day by the lake or in the mountains.

In winter, the views are especially beautiful, with the mountains and villages covered in snow. Even if you don’t ride the full route, it’s worth taking part of the journey for the big windows, cozy atmosphere, and unforgettable scenery.
12 – Explore More with the Montreux Riviera Card
If you’re staying overnight in Montreux or nearby Vevey, you’ll receive a Montreux Riviera Card for free at check-in. This little perk makes exploring the area easier. The card gives you free public transport on local buses and trains, plus discounts on popular attractions.
With this card, you can easily reach destinations like Chillon Castle, the Lavaux Vineyards (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Chaplin’s World, or even the Queen: The Studio Experience museum. For me, the biggest advantage is the flexibility. You can hop on and off buses or trains without worrying about tickets, which is especially handy in the winter season when the weather changes quickly.
13 – Take a Winter Trip to the Lavaux Vineyards
Just outside Montreux, the Lavaux Vineyards stretch along the hills above Lake Geneva and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Even in winter, the terraced rows of vines with snowy Alps in the background are stunning. How to get to Montreux
From Geneva Airport:
If you’re arriving from overseas, the easiest way is to fly into Geneva Airport, which is about an hour from Montreux. From the airport, you can catch a direct train that runs along the Lake Geneva region, giving you beautiful views as soon as your trip begins.
You can buy your train ticket at the station, online, or through the SBB mobile app. Trains run often, so it’s a stress-free way to reach Montreux.
Arriving by Train:
If you’re already in Switzerland, the train is the best way to travel between cities. Montreux is well connected to major hubs like Lausanne, Bern, and Zurich.
If you plan to travel around Switzerland, getting a Swiss Travel Pass can save you money and make things easier. It covers unlimited train, bus, and boat rides, including local public transportation in cities.
Another option is the Swiss Half Fare Card, which gives you 50% off most trains, mountain railways, and cable cars. For me, having a pass took away the stress of figuring out tickets and made it easy to explore more of the region during my stay.
What is the Currency in Montreux, Switzerland?
Although Switzerland is surrounded by countries that use the euro, you will need Swiss Francs (CHF) once you ar there. Some places might accept euros, but the exchange rate is not great. It’s better to have some local cash on hand just in case. That said, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. In fact, I barely used cash while I was in Montreux and everywhere else in Switzerland.
Top Tip: Carry a small amount of francs for markets or smaller cafés. But for most purchases, use your card.
How Cold Does It Get in Montreux in Winter?
Winters in Montreux are cold but not extreme, especially compared to higher mountain resorts in Switzerland. From December to February, average temperatures usually range between -1°C (30°F) and 6°C (43°F). Some days can feel colder, especially with the wind or damp air from the lake. However, sunny afternoons are often a bit milder.
Snow in the city itself isn’t guaranteed all winter, but you’ll see rooftops and streets covered for a few days at a time.
The good news is that if you’re hoping for snow, the surrounding mountains usually deliver. Like Rochers-de-Naye or Les Avants — are just a short train ride away and offer plenty of winter activities.
What to Pack for Montreux in Winter?
Since Montreux winters are cold and sometimes damp, packing the right clothes makes a big difference. Bring warm layers, a good winter coat, gloves, and a hat. I had a heated vest, and it made a huge difference! Comfortable shoes with good grip are important too because the streets can get icy. I also recommend packing an umbrella since rain and snow showers are common at this time of year.
What Language Do People Speak in Montreux?
Montreux is part of French-speaking Switzerland, so the main language you’ll hear is French. But if you don’t speak it, don’t worry. Most people working in hotels, restaurants, and shops also speak English. I thought it was very easy to get around. Even when I tried a few words in French, locals were friendly and appreciated the effort.
