1- Porto Cathedral
The Porto Cathedral, or Sé do Porto, was one of the first places I visited during my time in the city.
It sits on a hill in the historic center, and the views from the top are honestly incredible. From the cathedral’s terrace, you get a perfect look at Porto’s red rooftops, the winding Douro River, and the iconic Dom Luis Bridge that connects to Vila Nova de Gaia. I loved watching the city bathe in golden light at sunset—it really felt like I was looking at Porto from a different time.
The cathedral itself is a beautiful mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles, and you can really feel the history when you’re there. The inside is just as impressive, with detailed azulejos tiles telling stories from the Bible. I was especially taken by the quiet charm of the nearby Episcopal Palace, which added to the whole historic vibe.
Visiting the cathedral is FREE. If you have time, spend a little extra time exploring the cloisters and museum, which were definitely worth the small fee.
2- Dom Luís I Bridge (Ponte de Dom Luís I)
The Dom Luís Bridge is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit, especially if you want to catch some of the best views in Porto. The bridge has two levels: the lower deck is for pedestrians, while the upper level is shared by both pedestrians and trains.
The views of Porto from the top are incredible, particularly at sunset when the city is covered in golden light—it’s hands down one of the most stunning views I’ve experienced in Portugal. There’s a great energy on the bridge too, with people stopping to watch the sunset and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
You can walk across both levels, and each one offers a different perspective of Porto and the River Douro. The upper level is ideal for photos, giving you the perfect opportunity to appreciate the impressive architecture of the bridge.
The Dom Luis Bridge also connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, where you can visit the famous Port wine cellars. It’s such a lively spot with plenty to see and do, and I highly recommend checking it out.
3- Jardim do Morro
After crossing the Dom Luis Bridge, make sure to stop by Jardim do Morro. Located just across the bridge on the Vila Nova de Gaia side, this park has spectacular views of the River Douro and the city of Porto. It’s super relaxed, you’ll see locals gathering here, on the grass with a drink, and there can be live music as well. The vibe is laid-back, making it a perfect place for photos or enjoy the view.
The park can get crowded, but there always seems to be space to find a spot and enjoy the great view. The sunsets here are incredible, and when the sun sets, the whole park claps—it’s such a beautiful, shared moment. This is, without a doubt, one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Porto.

4- Miradouro da Vitória
Miradouro da Vitória, has some of the best views of Porto. You’ll see a great mix of rooftops, the Douro River, and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge all in one shot. It’s the perfect spot to take a photo or just enjoy the view without the crowds. It’s not as crowded as other viewpoints, so it’s a bit of a hidden gem.
The viewpoint is also on the former site of a 17th-century military fortification, adding a little history to the mix.
If you have time, come back to Vitória viewpoint during sunset for even more great views of the city as the light changes—it’s absolutely magical.
5- Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
After crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge, take a short walk up to Miradouro da Serra do Pilar. This viewpoint is located just above the bridge, offering one of the best views in Porto. From here, you can see the entire Douro River, the Luis I Bridge, and the historic center of Porto. The view is especially stunning at sunset when the city is bathed in golden light.
To get there, you can take the cable car from the riverside in Vila Nova de Gaia or walk up the hill. The walk is short but a bit steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere.
6- Cable Car Epic Views
Take the scenic cable car ride from Jardim do Morro Station over to Vila Nova de Gaia.
It’s a fun way to glide past rooftops and take in fantastic views of Porto from above. The best part is the view of the city and the Douro River, especially looking back at the Dom Luís I Bridge. The ride is short, about 5 minutes, but offers a unique perspective that’s easy to miss on foot.
The Gaia Cable Car has become a popular way to travel between the Douro riverfront and the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge. It’s a smooth ride that gives you a perfect vantage point of Porto’s iconic buildings and bridges—great for taking some incredible photos. The views are definitely worth the trip.

7- Terrace Lounge 360º / Espaço Porto Cruz
If you’re looking for a rooftop bar with incredible views, Terrace Lounge 360º is a great place to visit. You can actually spot it while riding the cable car.
The views from the rooftop terrace are absolutely stunning. You get a 360-degree panorama of Porto, including the Douro River, the Dom Luis Bridge, and the historic center of the city. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. The atmosphere is lively with a DJ playing fun music, but the vibe remains relaxed and not overwhelming.
8- Bar Rooftop Flores
This place is a local favorite and a hidden gem. Bar Rooftop Flores is a little oasis right in the heart of Porto. The space feels calm and is really green, with great views of the rooftops and the cathedral. The atmosphere was peaceful and quiet, perfect if you want to get away from the busy city and relax in a serene spot.
We had a wonderful time enjoying a glass of wine in this rooftop garden bar. The prices are reasonable, and the service is friendly. It’s ideal for an aperitif break in a charming, relaxed setting. A wonderful discovery that I 100% recommend!

9- Torre dos Clérigos
Clérigos Tower is another iconic landmark and offers one of the most beautiful views of Porto. If you’re up for a little adventure, climbing the 225 steps of Torre dos Clérigos is a must-do in the city. It’s definitely a bit of a workout, but the reward is totally worth it.
Once you reach the top, you’re treated to 360-degree panoramic views of the city—everything from the iconic red-tiled rooftops to the shimmering Douro River. The view is one of the best in Porto, and it feels so special to see the city from such a high vantage point.
The tower itself is part of the Clérigos Church, which is a beautiful Baroque building in the city center. You can’t miss it—it’s the tallest building in Porto! Besides the climb, the church and the surrounding area are also worth exploring. The view from the top is a great way to really appreciate how Porto stretches out across the river and up the hills.
10- Ribeira District
The Ribeira District in Porto is one of the most scenic spots in the city, and it’s a place you definitely don’t want to miss.
Located along the Douro River, the views from here are incredible, with colorful, historic buildings lining the waterfront. From the riverside, you can look across to Vila Nova de Gaia and see the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge over the water. The combination of the river, the bridges, and the city’s beautiful old architecture makes this area perfect for taking photos or just enjoying the view.
If you want to see the city from a different perspective, I highly recommend taking a boat tour. The Six Bridges Cruise offers a unique view of Porto’s famous bridges and gives you a chance to see the city from the water, which is one of the best ways to appreciate its beauty.
Take your time and walk along the river, have a drink at a riverside cafe, or just sit and watch the boats go by. The Ribeira District offers some of the most stunning views in Porto.

The vibe is super laid-back; it is an ideal place to unwind and enjoy the scenery.

When is the Best Time to Visit Porto?
Spring & Fall (March–May / September–October)
If you want mild weather and fewer crowds, spring and fall are ideal. The temperatures are comfortable, flowers are blooming, and the city feels a little more relaxed. It’s a great time for sightseeing, wine tastings, and boat rides along the Douro without too many tourists around.
Summer (June–August)
The last time I was in Porto was in July, and I was surprised by how cool it actually felt, even during the day. Since Porto is right on the water, the breeze helps keep the temperature down, and it’s often windy, which makes even summer days feel pleasant. I even needed a light jacket in the evenings because it got a bit chilly! Since the summer months are peak season, expect bigger crowds.
Winter (November–February)
Porto doesn’t get freezing, but winter is the rainiest time of year. It’s quieter, though, so if you don’t mind a little drizzle, this could be a cozy time to explore museums, cafes, and indoor wine cellars. Just pack a good umbrella and waterproof shoes.
How to Get Around Porto?
Porto is such a great place to explore on foot. A lot of the main attractions are close together, so walking is honestly one of the best ways to take in the views, cute streets, and all those little details, like the tiled doorways and balconies.
But the city is definitely hilly, so I’d recommend mixing in some public transport too. The metro is super easy to use—make sure to check out São Bento Station, it’s beautiful! Trams and buses help get you to the farther spots.
One of my favorite things was the cable car in Vila Nova de Gaia—it’s short but scenic, and gives you amazing views over the river and the rooftops. There are also lifts around the city that make getting up and down the hills way easier, especially if you’re short on time or energy.
You really don’t need a car here. A combo of walking, public transport, and maybe a cable car ride or two is all you need to get around comfortably.
Porto is a city full of hills, stairs, cobbled streets, and narrow alleyways, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Is Porto Safe to Visit?
To me, Porto felt like a safe city to visit. As a female traveler, I felt completely at ease exploring the city, even with my family and children. The streets are generally calm, and locals are friendly and always willing to help. That said, it’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in busy areas. I never felt uncomfortable or worried. Porto is definitely a place where you can enjoy your time without stress.
Overall, is Porto worth visiting?
Absolutely! Porto is a wonderful city full of charm and history. It’s a popular place for a reason—there’s so much to see and do, from beautiful places to its iconic landmarks and spectacular views.
The city has some of the most stunning views you’ll find in Portugal. You can enjoy them while looking out over the Douro River, crossing the Dom Luís Bridge, or from the top of Clérigos Tower.
