POSITANO ITINERARY: Perfect One Day Travel Guide

Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy, Europe

You made it to Positano, YEY!! One of my favorite towns on the Amalfi Coast!

This postcard-perfect town is known for its colorful pastel houses cascading down steep cliffs, charming boutique shops filled with local crafts, and delicious seafood served with stunning sea views. Wander the narrow streets lined with vibrant flowers, relax at beach clubs, and take a boat ride to hidden coves. Don’t miss the breathtaking views from the beach, where the colorful cliffs meet the turquoise Mediterranean waters. Positano is the perfect mix of beauty, relaxation, and that dreamy “la dolce vita” vibe!

If you only have one day to explore Positano, whether you’re stopping by on a day trip from nearby Amalfi Coast villages or arriving by ferry, you’ll want to make the most of every moment. From soaking in panoramic views at scenic overlooks to indulging in a long seaside lunch, Positano offers a magical experience even in a short visit.

The best way to explore Positano is on foot, it is absolutely beautiful but has tons of steep streets. Many areas can only be reached by stairs, so get ready for a LOT of climbing! Driving isn’t the best option because parking is limited and expensive. Comfortable shoes are a must for walking around this stunning coastal town!

If you’re staying in nearby towns, you can take the SITA bus to Positano. Bus ticket can be purchased in advance at Tabacchi shops (tobacco shop), as they are not sold on board. This is an affordable and easy way to travel between Amalfi Coast villages while enjoying great views along the way.

GETTING AROUND POSITANO

Positano is a small town, and the best way to get around is on foot. The streets are steep, with lots of stairs, but every climb rewards you with great views of the colorful cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea. There are local buses that run through Positano, connecting it with neighboring towns, as well as a private car service, but walking is a great way to soak in the town’s charm. If you want to explore beyond Positano, ferries and private boats are a scenic way to visit other Amalfi Coast villages while enjoying stunning coastal views.

BEST TIME TO VISIT POSITANO

APRIL, MAY, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER (Shoulder Season)

April, May, September, and October are the perfect months to visit Positano and the Amalfi Coast! The weather is mild and pleasant, which it ideal for exploring the town and its surroundings without the intense summer heat. With fewer tourists compared to the peak summer months, you’ll enjoy a more relaxed and peaceful experience. These months allow you to take in the beauty of Positano at your own pace, whether you’re strolling through the streets of this charming town or enjoying a beach day. It’s the perfect balance of great weather and smaller crowds, making it the best time to visit!

JUNE-AUGUST (high season)

It starts to get really busy in late June but July and August are the busiest and hottest months of the year on the Amalfi Coast, and while this is peak season, it comes with a few challenges. The weather can be extremely hot, with temperatures rising, making it feel a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to the intense summer heat. Positano and other towns along the coast become very busy, as this is when most travelers flock to the region, making the streets and beaches crowded.

Prices for hotels and attractions are much higher during these months, so be prepared for a more expensive experience and restaurants have to be reserved way in advance. The crowds can make it harder to fully enjoy the beauty and charm of the Amalfi Coast, as it can feel rushed and packed, especially at popular sights and beaches.

NOVEMBER – MARCH (off-season)

November through March is the off-season on the Amalfi Coast, with cooler weather and fewer crowds. While some hotels and restaurants in these coastal towns close for the winter, those that remain open are more affordable, which can be a good option if you are looking for a more budget-friendly experience.

HOW TO SPEND THE PERFECT DAY IN POSITANO

Start Your Day with a Vintage Car Tour

Kick off your day in Positano with a truly unforgettable experience—a vintage car tour! This is such a unique way to explore Positano, combining the charm of a classic car with stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. Cruising through the winding streets in a vintage car feels like stepping into a dream. During the morning, the town is sill quiet and peaceful, so you’ll get to see the vibrant colors of the town, and coastal scenery with no crowds, make it a picture-perfect start to your day.

There are options where you can drive yourself or have a driver, depending on what you prefer. We chose to have a driver since the cars are stick shift, the roads are narrow, and Positano is hilly—and it was the best choice! Our driver was amazing, taking us to incredible spots, snapping photos, and even capturing some videos.

Make sure to stop by the famous cliffside fruit stand, (address and google coordinates below) located just south of Positano before Praiano. It’s the most picturesque spot with breathtaking views, and the local vendor there is hilarious. He grabbed our phone, directed us into fun poses, and made sure we left with perfect pictures. 🍋Don’t forget to support for this local vendor by purchasing some fruit while taking photos!

📍 Address: SS163, 53, Positano (google maps coordinates: 40.62403563310551, 14.502228577157435)

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind way to explore Positano, this is it.

ENJOY COFFEE WITH A VIEW

After, or if you opt not to take the vintage car tour, make your starting point at the top of Positano (where the bus would drop you off) and begin strolling down towards the town. On the way, take a moment to stop for a coffee with a view at Dolce & Salato. This charming café is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a delicious espresso while taking in the best views of Positano, its colorful cliffs, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.

WALK DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF POSITANO

Take your time as you make your way down the winding streets of Positano. The narrow, pedestrian-only alleys provide the perfect opportunity to explore at a leisurely pace, so you cam fully soak in the charm of this iconic town. While the streets can get crowded with tourists, you’ll find plenty of boutique shops and restaurants in the town center to pop into along the way. What truly makes the walk one of the best things to do in Positano is the breathtaking beauty surrounding you—the vibrant pergolas, colorful flowers, and lush greenery that adorn the peach-toned walls, creating a stunning atmosphere at every turn. The closer you get to the bottom, the more you’ll feel the unique vibe and beauty of this incredible town.

RELAX ON POSITANO’S FAMOUS BEACH

BEACH TIME! Marina Grande, also known as Spiaggia Grande Beach, is the largest beach in Positano and definitely a must-visit. The beach is free to access, so you can easily take in the beauty of the turquoise sea and the colorful cliffside homes that make Positano so iconic. If you’re looking for a bit more comfort, you can rent chairs and umbrellas at the beach club area for a more relaxing experience. If you choose to lounge under the sun or take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water, Spiaggia Grande Beach is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. Keep in mind, this popular spot can get crowded, especially during the peak summer months, so it’s best to arrive early for a prime spot!

HAVE LUNCH AT THE ICONIC CHEZ BLACK

After relaxing on the beach, it’s time to turn around and head to Chez Black for lunch—it’s right on the beach, so you won’t have to go far! This is Positano’s iconic restaurant, known for its nautical theme, lively atmosphere, and stunning views of the main beach—making it a must-visit! They serve delicious Italian dishes, from fresh seafood and pasta to specialties like sea urchin. We got the octopus, ravioli and melon with prosciutto, all were delicious! Pair your meal with a chilled Aperol Spritz or a glass of Italian wine, and take in the beautiful surroundings. It’s also a great spot for some people-watching while enjoying the vibrant Positano vibe.

Make sure to make reservations in advance, especially during peak season!

LEMON SORBET TIME!

After lunch, it’s time for a sweet treat! Head over to the iconic Collina Positano Bakery and grab a refreshing lemon sorbet—it’s the perfect way to experience the local flavors. The tangy lemon taste and icy texture are a must-try while you’re in Positano! Enjoy it while strolling through the lovey streets or relaxing by the beach, it’s the perfect way to take in the stunning views of Positano while savoring a little piece of paradise.

WALK BACK UP AND SHOP FOR SOUVENIRS

After lunch, it’s time to work off that meal by strolling back up through Positano’s narrow streets. Get lost in the maze of narrow staircases and alleyways, popping into the many shops along the way, where you can find everything from locally made lemon-scented candles to hand-crafted pottery, jewelry, and unique fashion pieces. It’s also a great chance to pick up a souvenir that captures the essence of Positano to remember your trip.

As you make your way back up, be sure to stop by the iconic Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a must-see landmark with its beautiful dome. And don’t forget to take the famous postcard shot—there are plenty of perfect spots along the main strip to snap a picture with the breathtaking views of the cliffs, sea, and colorful buildings as your backdrop.  You’ll have plenty of chances to snap photos as you wander up and down the main strip.

APERITIVO TIME!

Franco's
Dolce & Salato

Now it’s time for Aperitivo—the perfect way to enjoy a refreshing cocktail while taking in the stunning views of Positano. This is truly la dolce vita at its finest! Here are two options for best places to experience the Amalfi Coast’s laid-back vibe with a drink in hand:

Franco’s Bar – This trendy outdoor cocktail lounge is one of the most popular spots in Positano. With a lively atmosphere, neo-baroque fountain, and incredible sea views, it’s a must-visit for those looking for a vibrant vibe. However, be prepared to spend. They don’t take reservations and the front-row spots require a €40 minimum spend per person. Be sure to arrive early to snag a great seat!

Dolce & Salato – If you want the same amazing views but without the hefty price tag, head to Dolce & Salato, just a 3-minute walk uphill. This spot has a quieter, more laid-back vibe with self-serve drinks, but the quality and views are just as stunning. Plus, there’s no minimum spend—perfect for those who want to enjoy their Aperitivo without breaking the bank!

DINNER AT ALDO’S

After a full day of exploring Positano, there’s no better way to unwind than with dinner at Aldo’s, located in the stunning Le Sirenuse hotel. The seafood here is fresh and flavorful, with dishes that showcase the best of the Mediterranean. Enjoy your meal on the outdoor terrace, where you’re just steps away from the beautiful pool area and bar—perfect for a drink or a few photos before your meal. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff make this place feel like a little slice of paradise, and the cocktails are absolutely delicious! As you enjoy your dinner, you’ll be surrounded by best views of Positano and its colorful pastel houses. It’s the perfect way to end your day, taking in the beauty of the Amalfi Coast while enjoying a delicious meal.

IS IT WORTH IT?

While it may require a bit of planning, visiting Positano is absolutely, hands down worth it! Whether you’re arriving by ferry, car, or bus, the journey is part of the experience. The stunning cliffs, colorful houses, and breathtaking views make it one of the most picturesque places on the Amalfi Coast. Once you’re there, you’ll be charmed by the narrow streets, beautiful beach, and lively atmosphere.
