Getting to Rome is easy because the city has great transportation. If you’re flying from another country or traveling within Italy, there are many convenient options. Rome has major international airports, high-speed trains, and good highways, so arriving is simple and the start of an amazing trip.

By Air

The best way to get to Rome depends on your starting point. If you’re flying, Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO) is the main international Airport. You’ll find direct flights from many popular destinations across Europe, North America, and beyond.

Rome’s second airport, Ciampino (CIA), is a smaller hub primarily used by budget airlines. From either airport, you can take a train, bus, shuttle, or taxi to reach the city center.

By Train

The Leonardo Express train is the fastest and most convenient way to reach the city center, taking about 30 minutes to Termini Train Station. Cost: €14 express | €8 local. Click here for tickets and schedules

Getting Around Rome

Navigating the City of Rome is an adventure in itself. With so many transportation options, getting from one main attraction to another is seamless. The city is highly walkable, especially in the historic center. Every street, piazza, and monument in Rome has a story from the past. Walking is one of the best ways to experience the city—you’ll find hidden spots and enjoy its historic sites up close.

For longer distances, Rome’s metro system is one of the fastest and most efficient ways to travel. With three main lines (A, B, and C), the metro connects key metro stations near major historic sites like the Colosseum, Vatican City, and Piazza di Spagna, making it a convenient option for sightseeing.

Buses and trams also provide extensive coverage, reaching areas beyond the city center. Rome’s public transportation is generally reliable, but be prepared for crowded trains, especially during rush hour and summer months. Always factor in enough time when using public transit, as delays can happen.

If you want a more private way to get around, taxis are easy to find in Rome. They cost more than public transport but give you direct, door-to-door service. Keep in mind that traffic can be unpredictable, so it’s smart to plan extra time if you’re in a hurry.

For a fun and adventurous way to see the city, you can rent a Vespa or bike and ride through the streets like a local. Just remember that Rome’s traffic can be hectic, especially during the busy summer months.

Rome Travel Tips

CURRENCY

Italy’s currency is the Euro (€), so be sure to have some cash on hand for small purchases or places that may not accept cards. While credit cards are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas, smaller shops and local markets may prefer cash.

WEATHER

Rome can get quite hot in the summer, with temperatures often reaching the 90s (°F). Always carry a refillable water bottle, Rome has many public water fountains (known as “nasoni”) scattered throughout the city. These fountains are free with fresh drinking water!

Also, wear sunscreen, and bring a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

For cooler months, pack a light jacket as temperatures can drop in the evenings.

COPERTO (Service Charge)

When eating out in Rome, most restaurants add a coperto (cover charge) to your bill. This is usually between €2 and €6 per person. It’s a fixed fee that covers things like table service, linens, and cutlery. The coperto is common in many restaurants, especially in busy or tourist areas, and it’s added on top of the cost of your food and drinks.

It should be listed somewhere on the menu, so be sure to check for details to avoid any surprises when the bill arrives.

RESERVATIONS

Many of Rome’s top sights, like the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum, get very crowded, especially in summer. To save time, it’s best to book skip-the-line tickets ahead of your visit. This way, you can avoid long waits and spend more time enjoying Rome’s amazing history.

During the busy seasons, it’s a good idea to make reservations for popular attractions and restaurants. This helps you secure your spot and avoid the stress of long waits or missing out.

SAFETY/ PICKPOCKETS

I felt pretty safe in Rome, however, like any major tourist city, it’s important to stay vigilant. Pickpockets target busy areas like the metro stations and major tourist attractions. Keep your belongings secure, use a crossbody bag, and AVOID putting wallets or phones in your back pocket.

LANGUAGE

Italian is the official language, but many people on the Amalfi Coast speak basic English, especially in tourist spots. Still, learning a few Italian words like grazie (thank you) and per favore (please) can make your trip feel more special and shows respect to the locals.

When to visit Rome

APRIL, MAY, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER (Shoulder Season)

The best time to visit. The weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring without the intense heat. You can enjoy shorter wait times and fewer crowds due to fewer tourists. In Spring, the blooming flowers add to the charm, while Fall showcases beautiful colors.

JUNE-AUGUST (Peak Season)

It is very busy, hot, and humid. July tends to be the hottest month, which can make sightseeing uncomfortable. Additionally, some places may close in August as locals take their vacations during this time.

NOVEMBER – MARCH (Off-season)

Expect fewer tourists and shorter lines. Hotels and flight prices are generally lower making it more budget friendly. With cooler weather, you can enjoy indoor attractions (museums and galleries). Note, that the weather maybe chilly and rainy.

A must-visit in Rome, Vatican City is where you’ll be immersed in its incredible art, history, and architecture. From the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica, every corner feels iconic and awe-inspiring—it’s an experience you won’t forget!

The Vatican Museums are home to some of the most impressive art collections in the world, and visiting early is a great way to avoid long lines that form later in the day.

We Booked this Vatican Skip the Line Tour before opening hours, and it was the perfect way to see the museum with fewer crowds. With early access, we got to enjoy the stunning Gallery of Maps and the Sistine Chapel almost to ourselves, which made the visit really special. Whether it’s your first trip or you’ve been before, the Vatican is always unforgettable and one of the top attractions in Rome.

COLOSSEUM

The Colosseum is the heart of ancient Rome, where gladiators once fought before massive crowds. Standing inside this world-famous amphitheater feels like stepping back in time.

To make the most of your visit, I highly recommend booking the first time slot for a Skip the Line Colosseum Tour. Even with skip-the-line tickets, it gets very crowded, but going first thing in the morning helps you avoid the rush. The tour also includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so you get a full picture of ancient Rome.

Starting early gives you a calmer experience and lets you enjoy the beauty and history of these sites without the heavy crowds.

ROMAN FORUM

Walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum, once the center of politics, business, and daily life in ancient Rome. It’s best to visit right after the Colosseum. This Tour combines Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum visit.

PANTHEON

Enjoy the fun atmosphere of one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the center of Rome. It is surrounded by Baroque architecture, and you’ll see beautiful fountains, street artists, and outdoor cafes. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the city.

SPANISH STEPS

Climb the 135 steps of the Spanish Steps for a beautiful view of Rome’s historic center, or relax in the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom. If you visit in spring, the steps are decorated with bright, colorful flowers that make the scene even more stunning.

GALLERIA DORIA-PAMPHILJ

This is truly one of Rome’s hidden gems, often called the “mini Versailles.” It’s a stunning gallery with luxurious 18th-century rooms that are full of incredible collections of statues, paintings, and antiques. If you want to have it all, almost all to yourself, visit 1 hour before closing.

VILLA BORGHESE GARDENS

Rome’s most famous gardens, often called the ‘green lung’ of the city, are located near the Spanish Steps. Relax by the fountains, explore the Borghese Gallery, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Both the gardens and villa are free to enter.
