GETTING TO ZERMATT
After spending a few days in Zurich, Switzerland, we took an early morning train at 7 a.m. from Zurich HB (main train station) to Zermatt, with a brief stop at Visp, and arrived at arrived at Zermatt train station 10:05 a.m. The journey through Switzerland’s scenic landscapes was smooth and punctual, with stunning views of lakes, valleys, and snow-capped peaks along the way. Booking train tickets through the SBB app was incredibly easy, making the process seamless from start to finish, this is truly the best way to travel when in Switzerland.
The standard one-way ticket for this train journey costs around CHF 120 per person, but if you’re traveling around Switzerland, I highly recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass. It gives you unlimited access to trains, buses, and boats for the duration of its validity period, making your travels stress-free and hassle-free.
Zermatt is a car-free village and a relatively small town, accessible only by train, which adds to its charm and peaceful atmosphere. When you arrive, hotels provide shuttle services to pick you up from the train station, making it a smooth and hassle-free experience. The moment you step out of the station, you’re greeted by the crisp mountain air and great views of the Matterhorn towering in the distance—a perfect welcome to this alpine paradise!
ZERMATT TRAVEL TIPS
LUNCH AND DINNER RESERVATIONS
If there’s one thing you should know about eating in Zermatt, it’s that reservations are a must—seriously. During peak season, especially in the winter, the best restaurants book out way in advance, both in town and up on the mountain. And trust me, you don’t want to miss out on some of these spots.
If you’re planning to have lunch on the mountain (which you absolutely should), book ahead—these places have the best views, the perfect après-ski scene, and, of course, the most incredible cheese fondue. There’s nothing better than sitting outside, surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks, with a pot of melted cheese in front of you.
PACK A SWIMSUIT
I know, packing a swimsuit for Switzerland in the middle of winter might seem unusual, but trust me—it’s a good idea! Zermatt has some incredible outdoor heated Jacuzzis, saunas, and spas, and there’s nothing better than soaking in warm, steamy water while surrounded by snow-covered mountains. Many hotels have amazing spa areas, and there are also public wellness centers where you can unwind after a day of exploring or on the slopes.
CURRENCY
Although Switzerland is surrounded by Euro-using countries, you’ll need Swiss Francs (CHF) once you’re there. Some places might take Euros, but the exchange rate won’t be great, so for best experiences have a little local cash just in case. That said, credit cards are widely accepted almost everywhere—in fact, I barely used cash at all when I was in Zermatt!
WHEN TO VISIT
Zermatt is a year-round destination, but the experience completely changes depending on the season. Here’s what to expect:
DECEMBER-MARCH
Peak season! Zermatt is world-famous for its perfectly groomed slopes, après-ski scene, and magical snowy landscapes. This is the best time for skiing, snowboarding, and cozying up in mountain lodges with hot chocolate or a pot of cheese fondue. Just keep in mind that hotels and restaurants book up fast, so plan ahead.
APRIL-SEPTEMBER
When the snow melts, hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor adventures take over. The scenery is stunning, with lush green valleys, wildflowers, and crystal-clear lakes. Visiting during the summer months is also a great time to take the Gornergrat railway for breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. Expect warmer days but cooler nights—so pack layers!
OCTOBER, NOVEMBER
A quieter, in-between season. Fewer crowds, lower prices, and incredible autumn colors, make it a great time to visit if you’re not skiing. While some lifts and trails may close before ski season kicks off, the peaceful atmosphere and crisp mountain air make it still very much worth visiting—especially if you want to avoid peak-season crowds.
HOW MANY DAYS IN ZERMATT
I’d recommend spending at least 5 days in Zermatt—it’s the perfect amount of time to experience everything this great place has to offer. With plenty of time to explore the world-class ski slopes, take in views of the mighty Matterhorn, and enjoy the town’s charming atmosphere, you’ll have a trip to remember. Don’t forget to carve out time to appreciate the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you—there is so much to do, from hiking to relaxing in a spa or simply enjoying the views. Zermatt will not disappoint. Five days gives you the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation!
BEST PLACES TO STAY IN ZERMATT
Zermatt village may be small, but it has plenty of amazing places to stay, from luxury hotels with majestic Matterhorn views to cozy, family-run chalets. There are ski-in/ski-out hotels, spas, and boutique hotels in the heart of town. Here are some hotel recommendations:
LUXURY HOTELS
The Omnia is a beautiful, five star luxury hotel in Zermatt that has a modern design with a cozy alpine feel. It’s tucked up high above the village, and you enter through a cool tunnel that takes you to an elevator straight to the lobby, making it feel like a special escape. The hotel has 30 rooms and suites, each one designed impeccably, and it also has a library, a restaurant with an open fireplace, and a lounge bar with amazing views of the Matterhorn. After a day on the slopes, you can relax in the indoor pool, heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, or sauna, all with incredible mountain views. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some delicious food in a cozy, welcoming setting.
BEAUSiTE Zermatt is a newly renovated hotel that combines traditional alpine style with modern comfort. Located just a short walk from the Sunnegga Cable Car, it offers easy access to the slopes. The rooms are spacious and clean, many with stunning views of the Matterhorn. You get to enjoy delicious breakfast buffet each morning with a live cooking station. There is also the indoor pool and spa facilities. This is a great hotel that is new, comfortable and a convenient base for exploring the beauty of Zermatt.
CERVO Mountain Resort is a luxury hotel in Zermatt that combines modern design with alpine charm. Located just a short walk from the Sunnegga Cable Car, it has easy access to the slopes and stunning views of the Matterhorn. The rooms are spacious and well-equipped, with a cozy retreat feel, especially after a day of adventure. Hotel also offers a delicious breakfast buffet each morning. There is also a wellness area with an indoor pool and spa facilities, perfect for relaxation.
Riffelalp Resort 2222m is a luxury five-star hotel located high above Zermatt, offering stunning views of the Matterhorn. Accessible by a short train ride from Zermatt village, this resort is truly a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. Alpen Resort & Spa is a welcoming, family-run hotel located just 150 meters from Zermatt’s train station, close to ski lifts, and center of Zermatt making it a convenient base for exploring the area. The hotel offers spacious rooms, some with balconies with stunning views of the Matterhorn. There is also a wellness area with an indoor pool and jacuzzi, spa facilities, and an outdoor jaccuzi, perfect for unwinding. Hotel has an on-site restaurant that serves Swiss cuisine, with a super cozy atmosphere.
Hotel Bellerive is a 3-star boutique hotel located in the centre of Zermatt, just a short walk from the train station and ski lifts. Its central location makes it a great base for exploring the area. The hotel offers individually designed rooms and suites, each with a cozy atmosphere and modern amenities. Many rooms have balconies with Matterhorn Views. Breakfast buffet is served daily with local specialties, and the hotel also has a small spa area with a sauna and Jacuzzi for ultimate relaxation.
Zermatt Budget Rooms is an affordable and comfortable accommodation just a 5-minute walk from Zermatt’s train station and ski lifts, making it an excellent base for exploring everything the town of Zermatt has to offer. The rooms are spacious and can accommodate 2 to 6 people, with private bathrooms featuring a bath, shower, separate toilet, and hairdryer. You will also have a complimentary breakfast buffet each morning and access to the Alpen Resort Hotel’s wellness facilities, including a heated adventure pool, hot tub, steam bath, sauna, fitness room, and tennis court.
SCHLOSS Zermatt – CBD & Adaptogenic Spa and Sport Hotel

The hotel also offers free yoga and fitness classes, this is a great hotel if you are looking for both, an active and relaxing stay.
BEST THINGS TO DO IN ZERMATT
EXPLORE THE CAR-FREE VILLAGE OF ZERMATT
First things first, exploring the town of Zermatt is a must! We spent a good amount of time wandering through its charming, car-free streets. The town is incredibly picturesque, with traditional Swiss chalets, cozy cafés, and boutique shops around every corner. Take a leisurely stroll down Bahnhofstrasse, the main street, and enjoy the atmosphere of this snow globe village surrounded by stunning mountain views. Make sure to pop into a few souvenir shops, do some window shopping, and grab souvenirs for friends and family. Of course, treat yourself to a hot chocolate and some Swiss chocolate along the way. The town’s peaceful vibe makes it the perfect place to relax and take it all in.
GORNERGRAT
A trip to the Gornergrat is a must for any Zermatt itinerary. Expect to see some of the best views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks. To get there, you’ll take the Gornergrat Railway, which departs from Zermatt’s main station. You can buy tickets at the station or online in advance, which I recommend especially during the peak winter season. A round-trip ticket costs around CHF 100. The scenic 30-minute train ride makes several stops along the way, this journey is a perfect way to ease into the beauty of Zermatt. Once you reach the summit at 3,089 meters, you’ll be rewarded by more picture-perfect views of the Matterhorn, Gorner Glacier, and the Alps. Don’t forget to check out the viewing platform for some great photo ops! At the summit station, you’ll also find Europe’s highest-altitude hotel, the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, which has a restaurant, an astronomical observatory, and boutique shops. We spent a few hours exploring the area, then enjoyed a delicious Swiss lunch at the hotel’s restaurant.
SKI/SNOWBOARD
Zermatt is truly a skier’s dream, and there’s no better way to spend a full day by hitting the slopes! The mountain is massive, with tons of options for trails and lifts that aresuttable for all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. The snow is perfect—soft, powdery, and ideal for skiing through the wide-open space. One of the most exciting parts of skiing in Zermatt is the opportunity to ski over to the Italian side of the mountain! It’s an unforgettable experience that lets you explore different terrain, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the Matterhorn and the Swiss Alps. Plus, there are many great restaurants on the mountain, perfect for a cozy lunch or après-ski drinks. You’ll find plenty of spots to relax and take in the stunning scenery before heading back out for more adventure. Skiing in Zermatt is an experience like no other!
APRÈS-SKI SCENE
When in the Swiss Alps, experiencing après-ski is a must! After a great day skiing, its time to unwind. Relax with a drink in hand by a fire and dance the evening away. Zermatt has one of the best après-ski scenes, with plenty of spots to choose from. Hennu Stall, one of the most popular après-ski bars, where the party starts right on the slopes with live music and a fun crowd. If you’re looking for something more laid-back, Cervo Mountain Resort has a stylish après-ski experience with cozy seating, great cocktails, and spectacular views. Veuve Champagne Bar is another great option if you’re looking for a fun and a vibrant atmosphere. Zermatt is one of the top après-ski destinations in the Alps, alongside the iconic St. Moritz, another Swiss hotspot famous for its upscale scene.
Zermatt’s après-ski scene is a perfect mix of fun, relaxation, and great atmosphere, especially on a clear day with good weather after a day on the slopes. Whether you’re in the mood for a chilled glass of champagne, a cozy cocktail with a stunning mountain backdrop, or a lively place to keep the party going, Zermatt has it all. Some après-ski spots get crowded in the afternoon with live music and DJ performances, creating a buzzing atmosphere. If you’re after a more laid-back vibe, there are plenty of venues where locals relax and unwind.

Ice skating in Zermatt is such a fun experience! After exploring the town, head to the outdoor ice skating rink, which is located near the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. The rink is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, giving it a magical winter wonderland vibe. You can rent skates on-site, and the rink is a great place to glide around while taking in the views of the Alps. It’s the perfect way to add some fun and activity to our trip. Afterward, warm up with a hot drink nearby—definitely a must-do when you’re in Zermatt!
VIP GONDOLA EXPERIENCE
If you’re looking for a unique and luxurious experience in Zermatt, the VIP Gondola is a must-try! This exclusive ride takes you from the Matterhorn-Express valley station up to the Trockener Steg mountain station. With a maximum of 4 people per gondola, you can relax in cozy leather chairs and pop open a bottle of champagne included with your ticket. It’s perfect for a romantic experience for two or a special event to enjoy with friends. As you glide up, you’ll be treated to stunning views with the most-photographed mountain in the world as your backdrop. The VIP Gondola operates 270 days a year, running three times daily at 11:00, 12:30, and 14:00. A one-way ride costs CHF 100, and a round trip is CHF 150. In winter, you can combine it with a ski day (ski ticket not included), and in summer, it’s an ideal way to kick off a scenic mountain hike. At the top, you’ll have access to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise—it’s a special way to take in the breathtaking beauty of the Swiss Alps!
HUSKY SAFARI
For a truly unique adventure in Zermatt, you can go on a Husky Safari right in front of the iconic Matterhorn! Starting at nearly 3000 meters above sea level, the experience begins at Trockener Steg, where a guide will lead you to a scenic one-kilometer circuit. You’ll have the chance to meet the friendly huskies, and the musher will share interesting details about these amazing dogs while you pet them. Once the dogs are hooked up to the sled, it’s time to ride! As you ride along, the musher controls the sled, giving commands to the huskies, while the guide captures photos of your unforgettable experience.
IGLU-DORF ZERMATT
Located at 2,727 meters above sea level, this charming igloo village offers an unforgettable experience with breathtaking views of the iconic Matterhorn. You can either spend the night or just come for lunch or drinks. If you’re staying overnight at this ice hotel, you’ll be well-equipped with warm sleeping bags to ensure a comfortable night, even in the cold alpine air. If you’re not spending the night, visit during the day—the only way to reach the village is by ski or snowboard. If you’re coming in the afternoon, make sure to stop by the outdoor bar for a drink or a delicious Swiss cheese fondue (served from 12:00 to 2:00 pm)—just be sure to make reservations as it often sells out! The igloos, rebuilt each year by international artists, create a magical atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to relax, enjoy some fondue, and take in the incredible scenery of the Swiss Alps.
