Below are helpful resources to make your travel planning easier and stress-free:

ARRIVING TO ZURICH

Getting to Zurich is pretty easy, whether you’re coming from other European cities or flying in from overseas.

AIRPLANE

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland’s largest and busiest airport, with direct flights from major cities around the world. From the airport, it’s just a quick 10-15 minute train ride to the city center, making it super convenient and haste-free.

TRAIN

If you’re already in Europe, trains are a great option. Zurich’s main train station, Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB), is one of the busiest in Europe and connects seamlessly to cities like Paris, Milan, and Munich. The Swiss train system is known for being reliable, efficient and incredibly scenic—so the journey itself is part of the experience.

BUS

If you’re traveling on a budget, long-distance buses are another option. Companies like FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus operate routes to Zurich from cities like Munich, Milan, and Vienna. These buses have WiFi, air conditioning, power outlets, and onboard restrooms for a more comfortable journey. Most buses arrive at Zürich Bus Main Station (Zürich Carparkplatz Sihlquai), which is centrally located right next to the main train station (Zürich HB), making it easy to get into the city center. While buses take longer than trains, they are a more affordable way to travel.

CAR

For those coming by car, Zurich is well connected by highways, making it easy to drive in. However, parking in the city can be expensive and limited. If you’re planning to road trip through Switzerland, it might be easier to park outside the city and use public transport to get around—Zurich’s trams and trains are fast, clean, and super convenient.

GETTING AROUND ZURICH

Once you arrive, getting around Zurich is a breeze thanks to its excellent public transportation system, including trams, buses, and even boats! The city is best explored on foot or by public transport—which, by the way, is incredibly efficient, clean and always on time. The trams, buses and trains are super reliable and connect all the key sights, so you can easily explore the city at your own pace without any hassle.

If you’re planning to see more of Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass is a game-changer. It gives you unlimited access to trains, buses, and boats across the country, plus free entry to many museums. With the Swiss Travel Pass, getting around Zurich and beyond is effortless, making your travels smooth and stress-free!

And don’t forget your comfy shoes because you’ll be walking a lot—it’s the best way to see everything. Strolling through Zurich is the best way to soak in its mix of history, charm, and modern energy.  You’re going to love it!

WHERE TO STAY IN ZURICH

For a truly memorable Zurich experience, stay in the charming Old Town of Zurich. This area is the heart of the city, where narrow streets, cobblestone alleys, medieval buildings and centuries-old landmarks make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in Zurich’s history while still being close to the modern amenities and trendy neighborhoods. You’ll find cozy boutiques, traditional Swiss restaurants, and plenty of cozy cafes to relax in after a day of sightseeing.

Staying in the Old Town allows you to easily explore key attractions like Grossmünster Church, the Limmat River Cruise, and the beautiful Bahnhofstrasse—all within walking distance. If you’re looking for a boutique hotel or a charming guesthouse, the Old Town of Zurich has plenty of options to suit every style and budget.

WHAT TO DO, SEE and EXPERIENCE in ZURICH

You’ve arrived in Zurich—welcome to one of Europe’s most charming and sophisticated cities! There’s something special about how it sits on the edge of Lake Zurich, with the Swiss Alps in the distance. Zurich old town (Altstadt) feels like stepping back in time with its cobblestone streets, beautiful old churches, and charming little shops. But Zurich also has a modern, trendy side, with amazing restaurants, unique boutiques, and cool art galleries. You can take a peaceful cruise on the Limmat River (so relaxing), treat yourself to some Swiss chocolate (trust me, it’s worth it), and just enjoy the relaxed feel of the city. But we’ll get to all of that in just a bit—read on!

It’s also the perfect place to start if you’re planning to visit Zermatt—which is exactly what we did, to go skiing and see the iconic Matterhorn.

ZURICH ITINERARY - DAY 1

Morning

Start your day with a leisurely stroll through the heart of Zurich’s Old Town (Altstadt). The cobblestone streets are so charming, with colorful buildings, little shops, and cozy cafes that make you want to slow down and take it all in. As you wander, you’ll notice the perfect mix of medieval history and modern-day Zurich—tiny boutiques nestled next to centuries-old buildings, each with its own story to tell.

If you’re into history and love beautiful views, make your way to Grossmünster. This iconic church with its twin towers stands tall over Zurich, and climbing to the top is totally worth it. The views of the city, the Limmat River, and even the snow-covered Swiss Alps in the distance are breathtaking! Trust me, you won’t want to miss it. After taking in the sights, step inside to admire the beautiful architecture and the peaceful vibe of the church.

Next stop, is a short walk to Fraumünster, another real gem of a church. It’s famous for its stunning stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. The colors are so vibrant, they almost seem to glow in the sunlight—it’s like stepping into a painting. Even if you’re not usually into art, these windows will definitely leave you in awe—it’s worth stepping inside just to see them.

Once you’re done enjoying all that history and beauty, head over to Mühlesteg Bridge. It’s a charming pedestrian bridge over the Limmat River, known for its “love locks” and gorgeous views. It’s the perfect spot to stop and take a breather. I loved just standing there, taking it all in, and letting the peaceful vibes of the river and city wash over me. It’s one of those places where you can really slow down and appreciate the natural beauty of Zurich, along with its rich history and lively atmosphere.

Lunch Time

For lunch, make your way to a cozy café in the Lindenhof area. This charming hilltop park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city —the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a light meal while taking in the sights. There are plenty of of cafés with outdoor seating that let you enjoy the fresh air and the views. On a sunny day, it’s especially magical. Don’t rush through your meal—take your time and enjoy both the delicious food and the incredible city views. It’s the ideal spot to linger, sip your coffee, and unwind, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere before you continue exploring.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon diving into Swiss history and culture at the Swiss National Museum. The historic building itself is impressive on its own, with a castle-like architecture making it feel almost like stepping into another era. But once you step inside, that’s where the real magic happens. The museum houses so many different exhibits, each offering a glimpse into different periods of Swiss history. You’ll find everything from medieval artifacts, ancient weapons, and folk art to modern design and contemporary Swiss culture.

With enough time, you’ll be able to explore all the best things this museum has to offer, taking in the details and appreciating how Switzerland’s past and present come together. What I loved most was how each exhibit feels like a story waiting to be discovered. There’s so much to explore, and I found myself lost in the rich history of Switzerland’s heritage, learning about everything from its ancient customs to its modern achievements. Hands down, it’s worth visiting!

Evening

As the day winds down, take a leisurely stroll along Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s most famous luxury shopping street. This wide, tree-lined avenue is lined with high-end boutiques, designer stores, and elegant department stores, making it the perfect spot for some window shopping or even treating yourself to something special. But even if shopping isn’t on your agenda, the energy here is something you won’t want to miss. The street has this upscale, lively atmosphere, with chic cafes, grand old buildings, and beautiful displays that make it a pleasure to walk through.

It’s also a great place to see Zurich’s mix of old-world charm and modern sophistication. Take extra time as you wander—it’s one of those places that makes you feel like you’re part of the city’s elegant vibe, whether you’re shopping or simply enjoying the sights. Plus, you’re just steps away from the shores of Lake Zurich, where you can pause to catch a glimpse of the water at sunset. It’s the perfect way to wind down and enjoy the evening.

Dinner

For dinner, you’ve got two fantastic options depending on your mood, and both offer something special.

If you’re in the mood for something trendy and modern, head over to LaSalle in Zurich West. The restaurant has a sleek, stylish atmosphere with high ceilings and a chic vibe that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a hip dining hotspot. The menu is full of innovative dishes, blending Swiss ingredients with international flavors, with a unique twist on traditional cuisine. It’s the perfect spot for a chic night out, whether you’re looking to try something new or simply enjoy a beautifully presented meal in a lively, upscale setting.

But if you’re craving something more traditional and cozy, Swiss Chuchi in Old To is your go-to spot. It’s a quintessential Swiss restaurant that offers a true taste of the country’s culinary heritage. Their cheese fondue is the star of the show—rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious, served just the way it should be with crusty bread and potatoes on the side. It’s the kind of meal that makes you feel like you’re being wrapped in a warm, comforting blanket. Pair it with a glass of crisp white wine, and you’ll have the ultimate Swiss dining experience. If you’re a fondue lover or just want to try something iconic, this place is a must-visit!

Night

End your first day in Zurich with an evening that matches your vibe, whether you’re looking for excitement or relaxation. If you’re in the mood for a lively night out, head over to Zurich West, a trendy district full of cool bars and clubs. This area is known for its great nightlife scene, so you’ll find everything from intimate cocktail bars serving up expertly crafted drinks to energetic dance floors where the party never stops. The atmosphere here is always buzzing, making it the perfect place if you want to enjoy a night of drinks, music, and great company.

But if you’re looking to keep things a little more low-key and unwind after a full day of exploring, a peaceful walk along the Limmat River is exactly what you need. As the evening sets in, the city lights reflect on the water, creating a magical, calming vibe that’s perfect for taking it all in. Stroll along the riverbanks at your own pace, watch the boats gently glide by, and enjoy the quiet beauty of Zurich as the city settles into the night. It’s the perfect way to wind down and reflect on a great first day in Zurich and prepare you for another adventure tomorrow.

Morning

This is your second day in Zurich! Have hearty breakfast and after, start off your day with a river cruise from Bürkliplatz. Trust me, this is one of the best ways to see Zurich and its surrounding towns. You’ll get best views of the city and the Swiss Alps in the distance, and it’s just so peaceful. The whole vibe of being on the water with the city on one side and nature on the other makes for the perfect way to kick off your day. And if you’re visiting during the colder months, don’t forget to grab a hot chocolate—it’s the perfect way to warm up while enjoying the views! There are several round-trip cruises to choose from, each offering a different experience and view of the area.

You can take one of the short tours which last about 1 hour. These cruises give you a beautiful glimpse of the city, with Lake Zurich’s clear waters and the Swiss Alps in the distance. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere, making it the ideal spot for a relaxed meal with gorgeous lake views. The menu has variety of dishes, all of which are prepared with really fresh ingredients. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy your meal and take in the beauty of Zurich’s lakeside views without a rush.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, make your way to Kunsthaus Zurich, the city’s top art museum, for an unforgettable experience. If you’re an art lover or just someone who enjoys beautiful things, this place is a must-visit. The museum has a huge collection of art, from classic paintings by famous artists like Monet and van Gogh to modern art by contemporary creators. As you explore the museum, you’ll come across artwork that tells amazing stories and makes you think. What I loved most is how they mix old and new art, so there’s something for everyone. The museum itself is a lovely building, and it’s easy to walk through at your own pace. Take your time here, because there’s so much to see! You’ll find everything from Renaissance art to Swiss art. Don’t miss the Swiss Expressionist pieces—they’re really cool and show off Switzerland’s unique art style. If you like modern art, there are always new temporary exhibits to check out.

Other Great Options

If you’re a football fan, you have to check out the FIFA World Football Museum. It’s super fun and full of cool exhibits about the history of football, iconic players, and unforgettable matches. You’ll get to see trophies, jerseys, and interactive displays that make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. It’s an exciting spot where you can dive deep into the world of football and experience its rich history.

For some amazing views, take the cable car ride on either the Seilbahn Rigiblick or the Felseneggbahn. Both have breathtaking panoramic views of Zurich and the surrounding mountains. The ride is a great experience, and once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to beautiful sights that give you a whole new perspective on the city. It’s the perfect way to enjoy Zurich’s natural beauty and get some fresh air while soaking in the views.

Dinner

For dinner, head to Zeughauskeller, a must-visit spot in Zurich if you’re craving traditional Swiss food. This place has been around for centuries, and its cozy, historic setting adds so much charm to your dining experience. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you’ll feel right at home as you dig into some of the best Swiss dishes, like hearty sausages, rösti (crispy Swiss potatoes), and tender meats. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring, have a cold Swiss beer, and enjoy a delicious meal while soaking in the unique atmosphere. If you’re with with a big crowd or just enjoying some quiet time, it’s the ideal spot to end your day on a flavorful note.

THAT'S A WRAP!

And that’s a wrap on your 2-day Zurich itinerary! From the charming streets of Old Town to scenic river cruises and world-class art, Zurich has so much to offer in just a short amount of time.
