Best Day Trip from Cartagena to Rosario Islands
A Rosario Islands day trip is the perfect way to escape to a secret paradise, just a short boat trip from Cartagena. This group of 28 islands off the coast of Cartagena is part of the Corales del Rosario y San Bernardo National Park, a protected marine area known for its crystal-clear waters, well-preserved coral reefs, sandy beaches, and diverse marine life. Interestingly, the Rosario Islands get their name because, when viewed from above—whether by drone or aerial view—the islands resemble rosary beads. While there are 28 islands in total, 24 are private beaches, adding to their exclusive and secluded appeal.
Unlike Cartagena’s beaches, which can be crowded and not as pristine, the Rosario Islands is a great place to unwind—imagine Caribbean sea, white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, turquoise waters, and a relaxed, untouched feel. It’s the absolutely best spot to snorkel, dive, relax on a beautiful beach, eat delicious Colombian cuisine, or even join a boat trip with a lively crowd. Some islands are so small that they feel like your own private retreat. It is also home to eco-hotels and luxury beach resorts for those who want to stay longer. A Rosario Islands day trip is one of the best experiences you can have while visiting Cartagena.

With so many beautiful beaches to explore and relax on, it’s the perfect day trip to escape the city’s heat and crowds. The mainland has a beach, Playa Blanca, but it gets extremely crowded and can feel overwhelming with all the street vendors.

These depart from Cartagena de Indias Bodegutia Port (the main pier in Cartagena) at 9:00 AM daily the ride is 1 hour, if you go in the morning, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your day! The last boat departs at 3pm and costs $20 each way per person. Public boats are typically larger and carry multiple passengers, so its more budget-friendly but less flexible option. The boat ride 45 minutes to 1 hour.

BEST TIME TO VISIT THE ROSARIO ISLANDS

Timing your Rosario Islands day trip right can make a huge difference in your experience. From perfect beach weather to avoiding the biggest crowds, here’s what you need to know:
DECEMBER- ARIL (Dry Season)
This is the BEST time to visit the Rosario Islands. You will have plenty of sunny days, clear skies, calm, crystal clear waters, lower humidity, and warm temperatures averaging around 29°C (85°F) This is ideal for outdoor activities and beach excursions. Since this is the peak season, you’ll find a lively atmosphere but also higher prices and more tourists—so plan ahead! If you’re looking for the best conditions for diving or snorkeling, March and April often have the clearest visibility underwater.
MAY – NOVEMBER (Rainy Season)
Avoid as this is Cartagena’s rainy season, with unpredictable weather and frequent heavy downpours. High humidity and wet conditions can make outdoor activities less enjoyable, and there’s also a risk of flooding, which may make getting around more challenging.
*I highly suggest booking the Rosario Island Day trip ahead of time, especially if you’re visiting during peak season. Things can sell out quickly, particularly if you’re planning to spend a few hours at a resort or have lunch there. You’ll also encounter many vendors trying to sell tours, which can be overwhelming.
