Where Is Alberobello & How to Get There?

Alberobello is a small town in the Puglia region of Southern Italy. It’s about an hour’s drive from Bari and just 30 minutes from Locorotondo or Martina Franca, so it’s easy to include on a Puglia road trip.

I recommend visiting by car if you can, since it gives you more flexibility to explore the area.

If you’re using public transport, you can catch a train from Bari Centrale to Alberobello, but you’ll need to change trains in Putignano and the trip can take up to two hours. There are also buses from nearby towns, but the schedules aren’t always convenient.

Alberobello Tips and Things to Know

Crowds

Alberobello has become super popular in recent years, mostly because of social media. If you visit during the summer, the Trulli District will get very crowded by midday. It can be hard to even walk around. My advice is to stay overnight if you can. Another good option is to arrive early in the morning and stick around until the evening. Once the day-trippers leave, the town feels peaceful and you can actually enjoy the charm of Alberobello without the crowds.

Safety

I found Alberobello to be quite safe, especially when compared to bigger cities. The smaller towns in the area felt even more relaxed. Of course, just like anywhere else, you should stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your things, especially if you’re in a busy spot.

Currency

Italy’s currency is the Euro (€), so be sure to have some cash on hand for small purchases or places that may not accept cards. Credit cards are accepted in most areas, but it’s always handy to have cash, especially in smaller towns.

Language

Italian is the official language, but many locals understand and speak basic English, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few Italian phrases like “Grazie” (thank you) and “Per favore” (please) goes a long way and adds to the experience.

When to visit Alberobello

APRIL, MAY, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER (shoulder season)

This is the best time to visit! The weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring without the intense heat. Additionally, the crowds are much smaller, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

JUNE-AUGUST (high season)

Summer months get very busy and HOT. Prices for hotels are higher. The region becomes very crowded, which can make it harder to fully enjoy the sights and experiences.

NOVEMBER – MARCH (off-season)

The weather is cooler, and some hotels and restaurants close for the winter.

How long do you need in Alberobello

While you can visit Alberobello on a day trip, I really recommend spending at least one night here. During the day, the town gets crowded with tour groups, and it can feel a bit busy. But in the early morning and late evening, after most people have left, Alberobello becomes calm and magical. This is when you can truly enjoy its special atmosphere. If you have the time, stay overnight to experience the best of Alberobello.

Trulli are the famous little houses you’ll see all over Alberobello, especially in the Rione Monti area. They look like cottages from a fairytale, with thick stone walls and cone-shaped roofs made from dry stone. People built them this way centuries ago because it was practical. They didn’t use any cement, so the houses could be taken apart quickly if tax collectors came to town. It’s a fun bit of history and one of the reasons Alberobello is so unique.

Most trulli are painted white, which makes them look like something out of a fairytale. They give Alberobello a unique charm that you won’t find anywhere else. Wander in the Rione Monti Area – “Trulli Zone”

A visit to Alberobello isn’t complete without exploring the Rione Monti area, often called the “Trulli Zone.” Located in the heart of Puglia, the “heel of the boot” of Southern Italy, this charming district is home to over 1,000 trulli, making it the highest concentration of these unique cone-roofed houses in town. As you wander through its narrow, winding streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale, surrounded by whitewashed stone homes that seem frozen in time.

From here, you can really appreciate the unique architecture that makes Alberobello so famous, especially how the trulli seem to blend seamlessly with the landscape.

The Belvedere is an open, public spot, which means it’s completely free to visit. This is one of the many hidden gems of this town. It’s also very easy to find, just a short walk from Piazza del Popolo, the main square.

If you visit during the day, the sunlight highlights the clean white walls of the trulli. In the evening at sunset, the soft golden light casts a magical glow over the town. Belvedere Santa Lucia is the perfect place to pause, take photos, and enjoy the beauty of Alberobello from above. Trullo Siamese

Trullo Siamese is one of the most unique and intriguing trulli in Alberobello. Unlike most trulli, which have a single dome, this one has two. The reason for this unusual design is rooted in local legend. It is said that two brothers once lived here, but after a disagreement, they decided to divide the trullo into two parts, each with its own dome. Hence, giving birth to the name “Siamese.” The two separate domes symbolize their split but also show the cleverness of the town’s architecture.

It’s only about 3 meters wide, which makes it the smallest trullo house in town. If you love discovering quirky spots, this one is a must-see.

If you want to see the best views in Alberobello, head up to one of the panoramic terraces above the souvenir shops. From here, you get a great look at the famous trulli rooftops and the whole town. I think this is the best way to really appreciate how unique Alberobello is.

You’ll find these terraces as you walk through Rione Monti. Just look for signs that say ‘terrazza panoramica’ or ‘vista panoramica da fotografare.’ Usually, you need to buy something small from the shop, like a bottle of water or a little souvenir, to go up.

If you’re looking for a unique souvenir or simply want to enjoy some stunning views, Maffei Sgobba Group Souvenir Shop is a great spot to visit. Not only can you browse a variety of local crafts and trulli-themed items, but the shop also has a rooftop with incredible panoramic views of the town, this was our favorite!

It’s the perfect place to take a break, snap a few photos, and soak in the beauty of Alberobello’s iconic conical roofs. The combination of shopping and views makes it one of the most memorable stops!

Alberobello in Miniature

If you’re looking for another great experience and a fun way to explore the town, Alberobello in Miniature is a unique place to see! This small-scale model is a detailed recreation of the Rione Monti district, the heart of the town, famous for its concentration of trulli. The miniature version perfectly captures the charm of the town’s iconic cone-shaped houses, offering you a bird’s-eye view of its distinctive architecture.

As you look at the model, you’ll be amazed at the craftsmanship that went into replicating the buildings and streets. It’s fascinating to see how the entire town, with its narrow winding streets and beautiful trulli, is reproduced in such fine detail.

Located in the quiet Rione Aia Piccola neighborhood, this viewpoint offers a more peaceful escape vs. the more tourist-heavy areas. The small park, with its big tree and low stone walls, creates a calm, cozy feel. It’s the perfect spot for taking photos, relaxing, or just observing daily life in this historic town. Plus, it’s free to visit and easy to get to, making it a lovely place to take in the beauty of this special town.
