How to get to Matera
While Matera doesn’t have its own airport, it’s easily accessible by car, train, or bus from nearby cities. The closest airport is Bari Airport (Karol Wojtyła Airport), located about an hour’s drive away. From there, you can get a rental car or take a Train and a Bus to reach Matera.
If you’re traveling by train, the nearest major railway hub is Bari Train Station, which offers connections to many Italian cities. From Bari Train Station, you can take a direct bus to Matera or travel by train to Altamura, followed by a short bus or taxi ride. The journey through the scenic countryside makes the trip an enjoyable experience.

When to visit Matera
APRIL, MAY, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER (shoulder season)
This is the best time to visit. The weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring without the intense heat. Additionally, the crowds are much smaller, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
JUNE-AUGUST (peak season)
It is very busy and HOT. Prices for hotels are higher. The region becomes very crowded, which can make it harder to fully enjoy the sights and experiences.
NOVEMBER – MARCH (off-season)
The weather is cooler, and some hotels and restaurants close for the winter.

Matera is a destination that’s meant to be savored and not rushed. I recommend spending three days here. This will give you the chance to truly immerse yourself and enjoy a unique experience unlike anywhere else in Italy.
With three days in Matera, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the Sassi area. This part of the city is full of ancient cave dwellings, boutique hotels, traditional restaurants, and centuries-old churches carved right into the rock.
Matera’s atmosphere is a perfect blend of history, charm, and breathtaking scenery. Take your time wandering through the maze of stone alleyways, learning about the city’s fascinating past, and stumbling upon hidden terraces with beautiful views.
Beyond just sightseeing, staying longer lets you experience Matera in a more immersive way. You can have dinner in a cozy cave restaurant, stay in a real Sassi cave hotel, and watch the city light up at sunset from a beautiful viewpoint.
If you want a unique trip with history, culture, and panoramic views, Matera is worth at least three days on your itinerary.
Getting around Matera
The Sassi of Matera is off-limits to most vehicles, so be prepared to explore it on foot. The best way to experience this ancient city is by wandering through its narrow streets. Every turn will reveal spectacular views of the Sassi, hidden courtyards, and centuries-old cave dwellings.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the stone staircases and uneven paths can be challenging to navigate.
If you’re driving, you’ll need to park in the upper part of the city and walk down to the historic center. There are several parking lots near the city center, and we found a convenient one just a 10-minute walk from our hotel.

CURRENCY
Italy’s currency is the Euro (€). While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases or places that may not accept cards.
LANGUAGE
Italian is the official language, but many locals understand and speak basic English. Learning a few Italian phrases like “Grazie” (thank you) and “Per favore” (please) goes a long way.
SAFETY
Matera felt very safe, but as always, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas.
COMFORTABLE SHOES
Be prepared for a lot of walking, there are also a lot of uneven cobblestone streets! Matera is an ancient city with many stairs and irregular surfaces, so comfy shoes are a must.

Murgia Timone is a stunning viewpoint just outside of Matera. The easiest way to reach it is by hiking from Matera to Belvedere Murgia Timone, starting with a walk across a suspension bridge then follow an old mule path.
