I didn’t expect to love the city of Monopoli as much as I did, but it truly surprised me. It’s one of those places that feels both relaxed and full of life—where the mornings start slow, the evenings stretch on with golden sunsets, and every corner seems to invite you in. Thanks to its easy access by train or car, it’s one of the best places to base yourself while exploring this part of Puglia, especially if you love being on the coast! In this post, I’m sharing all my favorites, travel tips, and of course, the best beaches you won’t want to miss – from sandy beaches to pebble beach spots and free beaches perfect for relaxing without breaking the bank.
Nestled along Adriatic coast of Puglia, Monopoli is a seaside gem that beautifully blends history, vibrant local life, and coastal charm. This harbor town is full of whitewashed buildings, colorful fishing boats, and lively piazzas, making it a perfect place to enjoy that authentic southern Italian vibe. Monopoli’s historic centre is a maze of narrow alleys, lined with stone churches, charming cafes, and local boutiques. At the heart of it all is Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, a busy square where locals gather for espresso in the morning and aperitivo in the evening.
The town’s centuries-old city walls and watchtowers tell the story of its rich maritime history, along with a medieval castle, Castello di Carlo V overlooking the sea. One of Monopoli’s biggest draws is the gorgeous coastline, with hidden coves, stunning beaches, and crystal-clear waters.

HOW TO GET TO MONOPOLI
Getting to the city of Monopoli is fairly straightforward, and there are a few convenient options depending on where you’re coming from. PLANE
There are few airport options in Puglia, and closest airports to Monopoli are Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (BRI) and Brindisi Airport (BDS). Bari is just under an hour away by car or train, so its the most convenient and easiest airport especially if you’re flying in from other parts of Italy or Europe. Brindisi is also a good option, especially if you’re exploring the southern part of Puglia first.
TRAIN
City of Monopoli is well-connected by public transport, and taking the train is one of the easiest ways to get there. The town has its own train station on the main regional line, with frequent service between Bari, Polignano a Mare, Brindisi and other popular towns like Alberobello with a quick transfer from Bari. Trains are affordable, reliable, and a great alternative if you’re not renting a car. Once you arrive, it’s a short walk (about 10 minutes) from the station to the old town and waterfront, making it very convenient for travelers with luggage.
CAR
Driving to Monopoli is a great option if you want the freedom to explore nearby towns and beaches at your own pace. It’s just a 45-minute drive from Bari and about 1 hour from Brindisi. While you can’t drive into the historic center, there are several public parking lots just outside the old town with easy access to everything on foot. If you’re visiting in the off-season, it’s much easier to find free parking on the streets nearby — just be sure to check local signs and avoid restricted zones.
WHEN TO VISIT MONOPOLI
April, May & September, October (Shoulder Season)
These months are a sweet spot for visiting Monopoli and the best time to visit! The weather is still warm enough to swim, but the crowds are thinner, making it easier to find free parking, book tables at local restaurants, and relax on quieter beaches. It’s also a great time for exploring the historic centre without the summer rush, and you’ll still enjoy long days and golden sunsets.
June – August (Peak Season)
This is peak season along the coast of Monopoli, and it’s when the town truly comes alive. Expect warm sunny days, lively beaches, and lots of events and nightlife. It’s the best time to enjoy the stunning beaches of Monopoli, but also the busiest—so book accommodation early and be ready for crowds, especially in July and August. That said, the energy is contagious, and everything is open and buzzing.
November – March (Off-Season)
While fewer tourists visit during these months, Monopoli doesn’t shut down completely. It’s a quiet, local vibe—great if you’re looking to slow down, enjoy peaceful walks, and experience the town like a local. Some beach clubs and seasonal restaurants may be closed, but parking is easier, prices are lower, and you’ll have the town’s charm nearly all to yourself.

You can visit the city of Monopoli for just a day or spend a whole week here—especially if you make it your home base for exploring Puglia.
Monopoli is one of the best places to stay if you enjoy being on the coast. Since it’s a central location, you can easily take day trips to other towns in the region – such as visiting the iconic trulli of Alberobello, stroll through the white-washed streets of Cisternino, or visit the picturesque hilltop village of Locorotondo. Monopoli is the perfect starting point!
Other popular places to visit are: Ostuni, the “White City,” Polignano a Mare, known for its breathtaking limestone cliffs, Martina Franca or even take a day trip to Matera, famous for its ancient cave dwellings. For something a little off the radar, don’t miss Francavilla Fontana, a quaint town with beautiful baroque architecture and authentic local charm.

Monopoli’s coastline is one of the most beautiful stretches along the Adriatic Sea—you’ll find everything from beaches with fine sand to rocky coves perfect for a relaxing swim. From scenic spots near the historic centre to more remote stretches of shoreline, this charming seaside town has a ton of places to relax, swim, and enjoy the sun. Below is a list of the best beaches to explore in and around Monopoli.
1- CALA PORTA VECCHIA
The main beach and most popular spot in Monopoli town is just a short walk from the historic city center, making it an easy and convenient spot for a refreshing swim. This small yet cozy beach has a mix of sand and rocks (bring water shoes), with clear, shallow waters perfect for a relaxing dip.
Be sure to arrive early, as it can get crowded, especially in the summer months. What makes Cala Porta Vecchia special is its stunning backdrop—the beach is framed by Monopoli’s 16th-century defensive ancient walls, giving it a unique historical charm.
From here, you can look over the old town’s whitewashed buildings and picturesque streets, just steps away from the shoreline. After a swim, you can explore the nearby cafés, grab a gelato, or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants overlooking the sea. If you feel like a walk, the Castello Carlo V is only a short walk, about 10 minutes away. It’s the perfect combo of history, culture, and coastal beauty.
2- SPIAGGIA DI CALA COZZE
Just a short walk south from Cala Porta Vecchia, this small rocky cove is a hidden gem along the coast of Monopoli. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for a swim or a bit of snorkeling, and the peaceful vibe makes it a great spot to escape the crowds. Locals love it for its amazing views and relaxed atmosphere. There are no amenities here—no sun loungers, bars, or bathrooms—so be sure to bring everything you need for a few hours by the sea. It’s the kind of place that feels untouched and natural, ideal if you’re looking for a quiet moment on the water.

Tucked between rocky cliffs and whitewashed buildings, Porto Rosso is a scenic sandy cove with a laid-back vibe and beautiful, clear water. It’s one of Monopoli’s hidden gems—great for swimming, snorkeling, and even a bit of rock jumping if you’re feeling adventurous. The sandy sea floor and fresh water currents make it a refreshing spot, and there’s usually plenty of space to swim. It can get busy in summer, but if you visit in the off-season, you’ll be able to have this peaceful beach mostly to yourself.
5- PORTO VERDE BEACH
Porto Verde is a very charming beach in a small bay, that is perfect for a peaceful beach day. There’s a small patch of sand—still lovely if you grab a spot early—so you can relax and swim in crystal clear waters surrounded by rocks. There are also high cliffs nearby if you’re into jumping in. It’s a public beach, and once you’re in the water, there’s plenty of space to swim and float around.
Right above the beach, there’s a modern beach club called Maritimo Urban Sun, where you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers. They have a bar, bathrooms, and even a restaurant—perfect if you want a bit more comfort. It’s quiet, clean, and feels more chill compared to the busier beaches down the road
6- CALA PARADISO
A large bay mainly occupied by a private beach resort where you can rent chairs and umbrellas, with a small section open to the public. It’s a family-friendly, sandy beach that’s clean, well maintained, and perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. While it does get busy during peak season, the calm, clear water and easy access make it well worth a visit. Parking is available right in front, making it pretty convenient.
7- SPIAGGIA DI PORTO MARZANO
Spiaggia di Porto Marzano is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches near Monopoli and somehow still not too crowded. It sits in a natural bay, which keeps the water calm year-round—perfect for a relaxed swim or just floating around. It’s a public beach, so anyone can enjoy it, and parking is super easy (and only €3 for the whole day!)
The beach has a chill vibe, with soft sand and warm water (especially in summer). There’s also a beach bar right on-site with sunbeds, drinks, and even a DJ on weekends—it’s a fun spot if you’re in the mood for both relaxing and a little music. Definitely one of the most charming places to spend the day in the area.
8- SPIAGGIA DI PORTO GHIACCIOLO
Just a 10-minute drive from Monopoli’s old town, this beach has a mix of free space and a private beach club where you can rent loungers for 10€ if you want to stay for the day. This beach has crystal clear waters and a refreshing chill to it, which feels amazing when it’s hot out. There’s also a restaurant and bar if you get hungry or want a drink. Parking is nearby and usually costs around €3–5. It’s got a big sandy area that’s perfect for swimming, relaxing, and spending a chilled-out afternoon. Definitely another favorite!
9- CALA SUSCA
Cala Susca is a small beach with some sand and rocks. It’s calm with crystal clear waters which is perfect for swimming. This is a nice spot if you want to escape the crowds, though it can get busy because it’s pretty small. There’s free parking nearby, which is convenient. Since there are rocks in the water, be sure to bring water shoes. It can be a little dirty sometimes, but it’s still a quiet, cozy place to relax.
10- CALA MONACI
Cala Monaci is a quiet little beach just a 5-minute walk from Cala Susca. It’s a small cove with sand, calm clear water and beautiful rocky views—perfect for a swim or just relaxing.
There is a free parking lot nearby, shaded picnic spots, and lifeguards on duty. You can even find smooth rocks to sit on or dive from, with amazing views all around. It’s not super easy to reach without a car, but if you can get there, it’s well worth it.
11- CALA PORTO CILIEGIA
Cala Porto Ciliegia is a sweet little beach just south of Monopoli. It’s a mix of sand and rocks, and the water is super clear and calm—perfect for a swim. It’s pretty quiet and laid-back, with free parking close by. There aren’t any services, so bring your own snacks, drinks, and towel. It’s not fancy, but if you’re looking for a peaceful spot to chill by the sea, this one’s a gem.
12- CALA CERASA
Cala Cerasa (right next to Cala Porto Ciliegia) is a fun sandy beach club along the coast. It also has beautiful clear water, comfy sunbeds, and umbrellas you can rent. There’s a bar and restaurant right there, so you can grab a drink or some food. They have live music or DJs, which makes the vibe really lively, especially in the summer. It can get busy, so it’s best to come early if you want a good spot. You can get there by car and there’s parking for guests. It’s a great place if you want to relax during the day or enjoy some good music and food by the sea
13- LIDO COLONIA
Lido Colonia is a charming beach in a small bay, just 10 minutes by car or a 30-minute walk from Monopoli. It has soft sand, clear shallow water, and has both a public beach area and a private lido with sun loungers, umbrellas, a bar, and a restaurant. Expect to pay €30 for two chairs and an umbrella, plus €5 for parking. It’s a great spot for a relaxed beach day, especially if you’re looking for some extra comfort.
14- CALA TRE BUCHI
Cala Tre Buchi is a secluded spot near Monopoli, accessible by a short walk from the road. It’s part of three small sandy coves nestled between cliffs, with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The area is relatively uncrowded. Facilities are minimal, make sure to bring your own essentials. The beach is accessible via a short walk from the road.
15- GROTTA DELLA CALA TRE BUCHI
Grotta della Cala Tre Buchi is a beautiful spot, part of three small sandy calanques (small bays) and crystal-clear water tucked into a small bay near Monopoli. The short hike down keeps it quiet and uncrowded, making it perfect if you want to escape the busy beaches.
There’s no facilities here—just natural caves for shade, plenty of space to swim, and stunning views all around. The walk down isn’t the easiest, so it’s best for those comfortable with a bit of adventure.
16- SPIAGGIA LA SCALETTA
Right next to Grotta della Cala Tre Buchi, Spiaggia La Scaletta is a public beach tucked into a small bay. It’s not a big sandy beach, but more of a collection of small coves with smooth rocks and crystal-clear waters that shifts from emerald to deep blue. It’s great for swimming, snorkeling, and even a bit of cliff jumping.
You’ll need to walk about 20 minutes from town and head down a rocky path and steps to get there. There are no amenities, so bring whatever you need for the day. Shade is limited, but easier to find after 3pm near the rocks or in a small cave. It’s a peaceful, scenic spot—but get there early, as space fills up quickly!
17- GROTTA DELLO STAMBECCO
This place is more of a scenic adventure than a typical beach day—it’s a rocky cove with dramatic cliffs, tucked into a wild, untouched part of the coast. It’s super quiet and peaceful, especially when the wind and waves are calm. The views from above are amazing, and it’s a great place for photos, or just to sit and listen to the sound of the sea.
That said, it’s not easy to reach—there’s no sandy shore and access is either really tricky or only possible by water. If you’re up for a bit of an adventure and the sea is calm, it’s a magical place to explore and disconnect for a while.
18- CALA SOTTILE
Cala Sottile is a little secluded beach that is super quiet and feels like a hidden spot locals love. It’s small, sandy, and nicely sheltered from the wind and waves—perfect for kids to swim safely. The water is super clear, and since it’s a bit tucked away, it’s a great place to escape the crowds and chill for a few hours.
12 THINGS TO DO IN MONOPOLI BESIDES BEACHES
1- MONOPOLI’S HISTORIC CENTER (CENTRO STORICO)
One of my favorite things to do in Monopoli was simply getting lost in the old town. The historic center is full of charm, with narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and balconies overflowing with flowers. The architecture reflects centuries of history, with touches of Greek, Roman, and Norman influence everywhere you look.
Every corner feels like a surprise—one moment you’re passing an ancient church, and the next you’re in a quiet little piazza with plants spilling out of every doorway. You’ll find many streets with hanging doughnuts on strings and the coziest corners filled with vines and blooms. It’s the kind of place where you wander slowly, with no real plan, and let the streets lead you.
2- CASTELLO CARLO V
This 16th-century stone fortress sits right on the edge of the sea and has such a peaceful, timeless vibe. Originally built as a military structure and later used as a prison, it’s now a quiet spot to explore and take in some of the best views in Monopoli.
You can walk along the outer walls and bastions, and even if you don’t go inside, a stroll around the castle and along the waterfront is such a relaxing experience. It wasn’t crowded when I went, and the views of the Adriatic Sea were stunning—especially around sunset when everything glows.
3- MONOPOLI CATHEDRAL
This cathedral really surprised me—it’s one of those places you pop into without expecting much, and then you’re just in awe. The interior is beautifully Baroque, with intricate details, a stunning dome, and a peaceful atmosphere.
One of the most special parts is the relic of the Madonna della Madia, which has a fascinating story deeply connected to Monopoli’s past. According to local legend, the image of the Virgin arrived in Monopoli in 1117, floating on a raft of wooden beams that were then used to complete the church’s roof. There’s also a crypt and some archaeological finds inside if you’re into history. Even if churches aren’t usually your thing, this one is a quick, meaningful stop in the heart of the old town.
4- LOCAL SEAFOOD
Puglia does seafood so well, and Monopoli is no exception. I had some of the best orecchiette and grilled fish by the harbor—fresh, simple, and absolutely delicious. One spot we really enjoyed for lunch was Sottocoperta—their fresh tuna tacos were amazing! They have an outdoor seating area right by the water, which I highly recommend. It’s shaded and has such a laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re in the mood for a full seafood dinner or just a few bites with a glass of wine, the seaside osterias here won’t disappoint.
5- CHURCH OF SAINT VITUS MARTYR
This one’s a bit off the radar, but I couldn’t stop admiring the plants around this little church. Right next to it is a charming corner filled with greenery and flowers—it’s the kind of spot that just makes you happy. You can also step inside the small church (it’s free), and it adds a quiet, peaceful pause to your walk through town.
6- LOCAL MARKETS
If you’re around in the morning on a Tuesday, stop by Mercato di Monopoli (they are only open on Tuesdays.) You’ll see lots of stalls with fresh produce, giant wheels of cheese, local seafood, and even a few handmade goodies. It’s a fun way to get a feel for daily life here—and even if you don’t buy anything, just walking through and soaking in the atmosphere makes you feel like a local, even if just for a few minutes.
7- PORTO ANTICO
The old harbor at Porto Antico is one of the most picturesque spots in Monopoli. You’ll see colorful fishing boats lined up on the water bobbing gently against a backdrop of historic buildings—it’s such a beautiful scene and totally captures the nautical charm of the town. It does get busy, especially in the summer, so I recommend coming early if you want to enjoy the peaceful vibe or snap a few photos without the crowds.
8- LUNGOMARE SANTA MARIA
Lungomare Santa Maria, the seafront promenade, is one of those places where you don’t need a plan—just stroll along, enjoy the Adriatic sea views, and breathe in that salty sea air. It’s especially lovely in the evening when the light gets golden and the whole coastline seems to glow. The sunset from here is peaceful, quiet, and the perfect way to end the day.
9- BOAT TOUR
Especially, if you’re staying overnight, booking a boat ride is such a great way to explore Monopoli from a whole new perspective—and it’s a nice break from all the walking! From the water, you’ll see the coastline in a completely different light, with secret coves and sea grottos that you can’t reach on foot. Plus, the water looks unreal—crystal clear and every shade of blue you can imagine.
10- PORT OF MONOPOLI
The Port of Monopoli is a cute little harbor that’s super photogenic, with traditional blue fishing boats gently bobbing in the water. You’ll see locals working on nets or unloading the catch of the day. It really feels like a genuine slice of everyday life by the sea.
11- PIAZZA GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI
This is the lively heart of Monopoli’s old town. Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi is where locals and visitors gather—from morning coffees to late-night drinks. The square is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and cafes, with outdoor seating that spills into the cobblestone streets. It’s the perfect place to take a break, enjoy the atmosphere, and do a bit of people-watching. Whether you stop by for lunch, an espresso, or aperitivo, you’ll feel the energy of the town here.
12- APERITIVO / NIGHTLIFE
Aperitivo time in Monopoli—is such a great way to unwind after so much exploring. There are plenty of cozy bars and lounges where you can sip a glass of wine or a spritz while enjoying the local atmosphere. I loved grabbing an aperitivo at Vini e Panini at Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, the cutest aperitivo bar in a square (super pretty decor), with great drinks, a lively vibe, and a perfect spot for people-watching. And if you want to keep the night going, the town has some nice spots to enjoy afterward, too.
