Unlike Cartagena’s beaches, which can be crowded and not as pristine, the Rosario Islands is a great place to relax. Imagine the Caribbean Sea, white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, turquoise waters, and a relaxed, untouched feel. I thought it was the best spot to snorkel, swim, relax on a beautiful beach, and eat delicious Colombian cuisine. You can take a private tour or join a boat trip with a lively crowd.
Some islands are so small that they feel like your own private retreat. There are also some eco friendly hotels and luxury beach resorts, if you decide to stay longer and overnight.

Are the Rosario Islands worth visiting?
Absolutely, hands down, yes! A Rosario Islands day trip is one of the best experiences to enjoy a tropical paradise just 45 minutes to an hour by boat from Cartagena.
With so many beautiful beaches to explore and relax on, it’s the perfect day trip to escape the city’s heat and crowds. The mainland has a beach, Playa Blanca, but it gets extremely crowded and can feel overwhelming with all the street vendors.
Especially if you are in Cartagena for the first time and only have a few nights, try to make one of them a trip to the islands. However, if you have time, consider an overnight stay to fully enjoy the beauty of the Rosario Islands.

Getting to the Rosario Islands
Getting to the Rosario Islands is easy, with several boat options depending on your budget and the experience you’re looking for.
Boat options: Public VS. Private
PUBLIC BOATS
The most affordable way to reach the islands. These depart from Cartagena de Indias Bodegutia Port (the main pier in Cartagena) at 9:00 AM daily. The ride is 1 hour.
If you go in the morning, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your day! The last boat leaves at 3 pm and costs $20 each way per person. Public boats are typically larger and carry multiple passengers, so it’s a more budget-friendly but less flexible option.
PRIVATE BOAT TOURS
This is a great option for a more comfortable and customizable way to explore the islands at your own pace. Renting a private speedboat or yacht lets you visit multiple islands. This is what I did, and it was a great experience. We avoided crowded stops, and enjoyed a more exclusive experience.
Price of the rentals can be anywhere from $400 to $1,500, depending on the boat size and type.
Tour experiences: Group vs. Private / Customized
Catamaran With Lunch And Snorkel Group Tours
This is a good option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly day trip with a structured itinerary. Most include stops at a few islands, snorkeling, and lunch. Expect larger groups and set schedules. Plus, most tours provide free cancellation if your plans change, offering peace of mind when booking.
Visit Resort Hotels With A Beach Club
For a more relaxed, comfortable experience, you can travel to the islands on an express speedboat. You will get a welcome drink and can use the hotel’s beach club facilities. Spend your day lounging on the beach and eating a freshly-prepared lunch—ideal for those wanting convenience and comfort. Most tours provide free cancellation, so you can book without worry if your itinerary shifts.
Private Boat Full Day Tour
This is what we chose, and we absolutely loved it! The private transportation made the experience go smoothly, and our tour was 100% personalized. We got to decide which islands to visit and how long we wanted to stay. They even added special touches like beach club access and seafood lunch at a private resort.
The boat we rented had a bathroom, a bluetooth speaker to hook up your music. They also had refreshments but you can also bring your own snacks and drinks. This option gave us the ultimate flexibility and exclusivity. For me, it was ideal for a more intimate and customized adventure.
Best time to visit the Rosario Islnds
Timing your Rosario Islands day trip right can make a huge difference in your experience. From perfect beach weather to avoiding the biggest crowds, here’s what you need to know:
DECEMBER- ARIL (Dry Season)
This is the BEST time to visit the Rosario Islands. I visited in February and it was perfect!
Expect to have plenty of sunny days, clear skies, calm, crystal clear waters, lower humidity, and warm temperatures averaging around 29°C (85°F) This is ideal for outdoor activities and beach excursions.
Since this is the peak season, you’ll find a lively atmosphere but also higher prices and more tourists—so plan ahead! If you’re looking for the best conditions for diving or snorkeling, March and April often have the clearest visibility underwater.
MAY – NOVEMBER (Rainy Season)
Avoid as this is Cartagena’s rainy season, with unpredictable weather and frequent heavy downpours. High humidity and wet conditions can make outdoor activities less enjoyable, and there’s also a risk of flooding, which may make getting around more challenging.
*I highly suggest booking the Rosario Island Day trip ahead of time, especially if you’re visiting during peak season. Tours can sell out quickly, especially if you’re planning to spend a few hours at a resort or have lunch there. You’ll also see many vendors trying to sell tours, which can be overwhelming. By booking in advance, you can avoid the stress and enjoy a much smoother experience.

There are so many islands to choose from in the Rosario Islands. There isn’t just one specific best island, it really depends on your preferences. If you are looking for a quiet escape, there are islands with serene beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for disconnecting.
If you’re looking for a more lively experience, there are luxurious beach clubs with fresh seafood, drinks, and a fun atmosphere.
For larger groups or if you are looking for a party vibe, some islands have activities and entertainment to make sure everyone has a great time.

Best Rosario islands for quiet escape and disconnecting
1. ISLA GIGI Island
This is a secluded and small island in the Rosario Islands which is a true hidden gem.
This island is perfect if you are looking to get away from the crowds. It has a beautiful beach with crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical surroundings. The peaceful, laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to relax, sunbathe, or snorkel in the calm sea.
Since it’s less frequented by large tour groups, you can truly unwind and enjoy the serenity of this untouched paradise.
2. ISLA ROSA Island
This tiny island rally stands out with a unique and charming pink hotel. The hotel has white terraces and balconies that give it a postcard-perfect look.
It’s definitely an intimate and peaceful place. Perfect for couples or small groups looking for a private getaway.
The entire island can also be rented. This is a great choice for larger groups if you want an exclusive island escape.
3. ISLA DEL PIRATA Island
For a true digital detox, head to Isla del Pirata, this is an ideal choice. This small and quiet island is for absolute relaxation. It has rustic accommodations and no TVs. This really allows guests to fully immerse themselves in nature. It’s an excellent spot for stargazing, enjoying the sound of the waves, and unwinding in a peaceful setting.
You’ll be super relaxed here! Take a nap in a hammock, kayak in the crystal-clear waters, or just enjoy a slow-paced island day. Isla del Pirata truly gives you that perfect getaway, away from modern distractions.
Luxury Beach Club Experiences at Rosario Islands
BORA BORA BEACH CLUB & HOTEL
One of the most popular beach clubs in the Rosario Islands. It is known for super chic, stylish ambiance and high-end service. I loved relaxing on Bali beds, sipping cocktails by the turquoise waters. For lunch we had delicious seafood.
The club has a mix of tranquility and fun. There is a DJs playing laid-back tropical beats throughout the day. This was perfect for me since I was looking for a great place to relax while still enjoying a social atmosphere.
PAO PAO BEACH CLUB
Is a more private and exclusive beach club experience, catering to those who want a relaxed yet refined setting. With comfortable lounge areas, crystal-clear waters, and attentive service, this club is ideal for travelers seeking a more intimate escape. The food and drinks are carefully curated, featuring fresh seafood and tropical cocktails, making it a top choice for a perfect day trip filled with sun, sand, and luxury.

ISLA CHOLÓN

Although not technically part of the Rosario Islands, ISLA BARÚ is a common stop for some people. Known for its stunning beaches, it’s a great spot for both relaxation and adventure, with plenty of opportunities for water activities.

Once the day-trippers leave (usually between 3-4 PM), you’ll have the island almost all to yourself. This will create the perfect vibe to watch the sunset without the crowds.
