WHEN TO VISIT SEVILLE
SPRING (March to May)
Spring is the best time to visit Seville, with mild temperatures and beautiful flowers in bloom. The city comes alive with vibrant colors during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in April, a major cultural and religious celebration with impressive processions throughout the city. Feria de Abril (the April Fair) also takes place in spring, offering lively festivities, traditional dress, music, and flamenco. The weather is perfect for outdoor exploration, making it an ideal time for sightseeing without the intense summer heat.
SUMMER (June to August)
You don’t need to avoid Seville during the summer months; you just need to prepare well. While it’s true July and August can be very HOT, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the city. We visited in July, and while the days were certainly warm with high temperatures, the early mornings were in the 70s, so we made an effort to start our day early to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. The historic city center is designed to keep streets shaded throughout the day, offering some relief from the sun. Hotels are equipped with air-conditioned rooms, and since fewer tourists visit during this time, you’ll find more affordable rates, particularly in the Casco Viejo (old town). If you’re willing to embrace the afternoon siesta—when many shops and attractions close—you can spend the hotter part of the day resting, and then enjoy the cooler evenings and mornings exploring the city’s beauty. Just be sure to pack sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay refreshed and energized.
FALL (September to November)
Fall is another excellent time to visit Seville. Temperatures start to drop, making it more comfortable for sightseeing and walking around the city. September can still be quite warm, but by October and November, the weather is pleasant, with cooler evenings and mild afternoons. Fall is also a great time to enjoy the local harvests, including fresh olives and seasonal dishes like pumpkin and chestnut-based recipes. The fall months also offer fewer crowds than spring, allowing for a more relaxed experience in the city.

SAFETY
Seville is generally a safe city for tourists, but like in any major city, it’s always wise to stay alert, especially in crowded areas. Watch out for pickpockets, particularly around tourist hotspots like the city centre, Real Alcázar, Seville Cathedral, and Plaza de España. Keep your valuables in a secure bag or money belt, and be mindful of your surroundings at all times.
BOOKING
Booking tickets in advance for popular attractions like the Alcázar or Seville Cathedral can save you time, especially during high season. If you’re planning to see a flamenco show, it’s also a good idea to reserve your spot ahead of time. Restaurants and tapas bars can get busy, so making reservations, particularly for dinner, is recommended to avoid long waits.
EATING
In Seville, dinner typically starts around 9 PM and can go until midnight, so don’t expect to eat early by North American standards. If you’re used to eating earlier, you might want to grab a light snack or tapas in the afternoon and then enjoy a leisurely dinner later in the evening. Tapas bars stay open late, so you can snack and enjoy the city’s lively atmosphere until after midnight.
CURRENCY
The official currency in Seville is the Euro (€). While many places accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases, such as snacks or local goods.
LANGUAGE
Spanish is the official language in Seville, and while many people in the hospitality industry speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic phrases in Spanish can go a long way. Simple greetings like “Hola” (Hello), “Por favor” (Please), and “Gracias” (Thank you) will be appreciated, and it’s always helpful to know how to ask for directions or a menu.
HYDRATE
Seville’s hot, dry climate is one of its main attractions, offering plenty of sunshine, but it also means the heat can be intense. The dry heat can trick you—sweat evaporates quickly, and you might not feel how much water your body is losing. This makes dehydration a sneaky risk, so it’s essential to stay on top of your hydration. Always carry at least a liter of water with you, and try to drink little but often throughout the day. Another great option is booking a guided walking tour with VIP access at 8:30 AM—before it opens to the public—allowing you to experience the palace without the crowds and truly soak in its beauty.
Once inside, you’ll be transported through time as you explore the intricate, unique architectural styles, from Moorish to Renaissance, that have shaped the palace over the centuries. Don’t miss the beautiful garden—a peaceful oasis with exotic plants and fountains, offering a quiet escape within the palace. It’s the perfect spot to marvel at the beauty and cultural legacy of this incredible place.
CATEDRAL DE SEVILLA
The Catedral de Sevilla (Cathedral of Seville) is another absolute must-see when visiting the city. Not only is it the largest Gothic architecture cathedral in the world, but it also ranks as the third-largest church in size, surpassed only by St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Built on the site of a former mosque, the cathedral took over a century to complete, starting in 1401 and finishing in 1506. Inside this largest gothic cathedral, you’ll see so much history. There are beautiful works of art, chapels, and religious items. One of its most famous features is the Tomb of Christopher Columbus, which adds to the cathedral’s significance as a place of historical importance. The mix of artistic and religious heritage here is simply overwhelming, making it one of the most stunning religious sites I’ve ever visited. After exploring the stunning interior, climb the Giralda Tower for panoramic views of the city.
PLAZA DEL CABILDO – A HIDDEN GEM
Plaza del Cabildo is a charming hidden gem tucked away in the very center of Seville. It’s a small, picturesque square that many visitors miss because it’s only accessible through two small passageways. Once you find it, you’ll see a beautifully curved arcade, with intricate architectural details and a peaceful, almost secretive atmosphere.
Historically, Plaza del Cabildo was once the site of a religious building known as the Cabildo de la Catedral, which was the headquarters of the cathedral chapter of Seville. The square has evolved over the centuries, but it still holds a sense of its past, with remnants of the original building surrounding the area. The square also played a role in the city’s urban development during the Middle Ages, and today, it stands as a peaceful reminder of Seville’s rich history.

Over the centuries, the palace has been home to dukes and aristocrats, and today, it remains one of the best-preserved private palaces in Seville.
Despite its beauty, Casa de Pilatos is often overlooked because most visitors head straight to the Royal Alcázar. This makes it a hidden gem, offering a quieter and more peaceful experience. Inside, you’ll find stunning courtyards, intricate tilework, and a beautiful garden filled with fountains and shaded walkways. Since it’s not as crowded, there’s no need to book tickets in advance—we visited midday in July, and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. If you’re looking for a less touristy yet stunning palace, this is definitely worth a visit!
TORRE DEL ORO
The Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) is another iconic landmark in Seville that’s well worth a visit. Located along the Guadalquivir River, this 13th-century tower was originally built by the Almohads as a defense against naval attacks. It gets its name from the golden reflection that once shimmered off its walls, believed to be due to the gold traded in the city during the time. Today, the tower houses a maritime museum, where you can learn about Seville’s role as a major port during Spain’s colonial era. Whether you’re admiring the tower from the outside or exploring its historical exhibits inside, the Torre del Oro offers a unique glimpse into the city’s past. Don’t forget to climb to the top for stunning views of the river and the city!

A visit to Mercado de Triana is a must when you’re in Seville. Located in the lively Triana district, this vibrant market offers a true taste of local life. Inside, you’ll find rows of fresh produce, meats, seafood, and delicious tapas stalls, perfect for sampling Seville’s culinary delights. It’s a great place to grab a snack or picnic ingredients, or just wander and soak in the atmosphere. The colorful displays and bustling vibe make it an enjoyable stop, whether you’re looking to shop for local specialties or simply explore the rich flavors of southern Spain.
SETAS DE SEVILLA – SUNSET WITH A VIEW
Experience Sunset with a view at Setas de Sevilla, also known as Metropol Parasol, is of the city’s most unique and modern landmarks. This massive wooden structure, resembling giant mushrooms, stands in stark contrast to Seville’s historic streets and offers one of the best panoramic views of the city. Take the elevator to the top and walk along the winding pathways of the viewing deck, where you’ll see amazing panoramic 360-degree views. As the sun begins to set, the city transforms, with golden hues illuminating the rooftops and historic landmarks like the Cathedral and La Giralda in the distance. If you have time, grab a drink at the rooftop bar and soak in the magical atmosphere before heading back.
