Tucked away in the Puglia region of southern Italy, Alberobello is a must-visit destination for many travelers around the world, known for its charm, history, and unique architecture. This small town, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its Trulli District, where hundreds of iconic whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs create a fairytale-like atmosphere. Walking through Alberobello feels like stepping into a storybook—trulli rooftops, cozy streets, and a warm, inviting vibe. Since it’s so popular and considered one of the most beautiful places in the region, most people add it to their Puglia itinerary. If you’re already exploring southern Italy, it’s a great addition to an itinerary that also includes destinations like the Amalfi Coast. It’s a place that seems almost unreal, and it’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with it.
This was our first stop on our Puglia road trip, and we wanted to truly experience Alberobello beyond the crowds. So, we decided to stay overnight in an authentic 400-year-old unique trullo, giving us the chance to enjoy the town’s peaceful charm in the evening and early morning, after the day-trippers had left. WHERE IS ALBEROBELLO & HOW TO GET THERE?
Alberobello is located in the Puglia region of Southern Italy, about an hour’s drive from Bari and 30 minutes from Locorotondo and Martina Franca. The best way to reach Alberobello is by car, making it an easy stop on a Puglia road trip. If you’re relying on public transport, you can take a train from Bari Centrale to Alberobello, though the journey requires a transfer in Putignano and can take up to two hours. Buses are also available from nearby towns, but schedules can be limited.

CROWDS
Thanks to social media, Alberobello has become one of the most popular places in Puglia, attracting large crowds, especially during the summer months. By midday, the streets of the Trulli District are packed, making it almost impossible to walk through comfortably. If you want to experience the town comfortably, consider staying overnight or arriving early in the morning and lingering into the evening. Once the day-trippers leave, Alberobello transforms into a peaceful, charming place where you can truly soak in its beauty without the crowds.
SAFETY
Alberobello felt pretty safe, especially the smaller towns. As with any place, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
CURRENCY
Italy’s currency is the Euro (€), so be sure to have some cash on hand for small purchases or places that may not accept cards. Credit cards are accepted in most areas, but it’s always handy to have cash, especially in smaller towns.
LANGUAGE
Italian is the official language, but many locals understand and speak basic English, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few Italian phrases like “Grazie” (thank you) and “Per favore” (please) goes a long way and adds to the experience.
WHEN TO VISIT ALBEROBELLO
APRIL, MAY, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER (shoulder season)
This is the best time to visit! The weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring without the intense heat. Additionally, the crowds are much smaller, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
JUNE-AUGUST (high season)
Summer months get very busy and HOT. Prices for hotels are higher. The region becomes very crowded, which can make it harder to fully enjoy the sights and experiences.
NOVEMBER – MARCH (off-season)
The weather is cooler, and some hotels and restaurants close for the winter.
HOW LONG DO YOU NEED IN ALBEROBELLO
You can technically see this fairytale Italian town on a day trip, but to truly experience it’s unique ambiance, staying one night is the way to go. During the day, Alberobello gets packed with tour groups, making it hard to enjoy at a relaxed pace. But in the early morning and late evening, when the crowds are gone, the town feels completely different—calm, magical, and much more enjoyable. If you have the time, spending the night lets you see Alberobello at its best!
WHAT ARE TRULLI?
Trulli are the iconic, cottage-like buildings that you’ll spot in the Trulli area of Alberobello, especially in the Rione Monti district. These unique homes, built centuries ago, have stone walls and cone-shaped roofs made from dry stone. The design was practical for the time—no cement was needed, and they could easily be taken down if tax collectors showed up! Most trulli are painted white, giving them a fairytale-like look. They add so much charm to the town, and wandering through the Rione Monti district, with its rows of these trulli houses, is one of the best ways to experience Alberobello’s magic. You’ll find them everywhere, from homes to shops, and they’re a big reason why the town is so famous!

Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’ve been before, Alberobello has so much to offer. This charming Italian town is packed with history, culture, and some of the best places to explore in Puglia. If you’re strolling through the famous Trulli District, discovering hidden spots, or enjoying local food, there’s plenty to see and do. One of my favorite things about Alberobello is how walkable it is—the easiest way to explore is simply by wandering through its picturesque streets. From must-visit landmarks to lesser-known gems, here are the top things to do in Alberobello!
WANDER IN THE RIONE MONTI AREA – “TRULLI ZONE”
A visit to Alberobello isn’t complete without exploring the Rione Monti area, often called the “Trulli Zone.” Located in the heart of Puglia, the “heel of the boot” of Southern Italy, this charming district is home to over 1,000 trulli, making it the highest concentration of these unique cone-roofed houses in town. As you wander through its narrow, winding streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale, surrounded by whitewashed stone homes that seem frozen in time.
Rione Monti is not just a historic site but also a lively area filled with local shops, cozy cafes, and great spots for photos. Many of the trulli here have been converted into boutiques selling handmade crafts, souvenirs, and regional delicacies like olive oil and taralli (a crunchy Italian snack). It’s the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of Alberobello, whether you’re browsing for gifts, enjoying an espresso at an outdoor café, or simply taking in the atmosphere.
While it’s one of the busiest parts of town, visiting in the early morning or late afternoon offers a more pleasant experience. No matter when you go, Rione Monti is a must-see and a perfect introduction to the magic of Alberobello!
BELVEDERE SANTA LUCIA
If you’re looking for one of the best panoramic view of Alberobello, make sure to visit Belvedere Santa Lucia. This scenic viewpoint has a stunning, bird’s-eye view of the Trulli District, with rows and rows of whitewashed houses and their iconic cone-shaped rooftops stretching out as far as the eye can see. From here, you can really appreciate the unique architecture that makes Alberobello so famous, especially how the trulli seem to blend seamlessly with the landscape.
The Belvedere is an open, public spot, which means it’s completely free to visit—one of the many hidden gems of this town. It’s also very easy to find, just a short walk from Piazza del Popolo, the main square. If you’re visit during the day, when the sunlight highlights the clean white walls of the trulli, or in the evening at sunset when the soft golden light casts a magical glow over the town, Belvedere Santa Lucia is the perfect place to pause, take photos, and soak in the beauty of Alberobello from above. It’s definitely a must-see spot if you want to capture the full charm of this unique Italian town!
TRULLO SIAMESE
Trullo Siamese is one of the most unique and intriguing trulli in Alberobello. Unlike most trulli, which have a single dome, this one has two. The reason for this unusual design is rooted in local legend. It is said that two brothers once lived here, but after a disagreement, they decided to divide the trullo into two parts, each with its own dome—giving birth to the name “Siamese.” The two separate domes symbolize their split but also show the cleverness of the town’s architecture.
As you explore the Trulli District, Trullo Siamese is a must-see, letting you see a glimpse into the town’s history and the unique architectural features that make Alberobello so special. The building is a perfect example of how the residents of Alberobello adapted to both their environment and their personal stories through the years. Inside the trullo, there is a small shop where you can pick up local souvenirs, so its a fun stop whether you love history or just trying to shop.
THE SMALLEST TRULLO OF ALBEROBELLO
The smallest trullo in Alberobello is a true hidden gem, offering a peek into the town’s rich architectural history. This miniature trullo, tucked away near the main streets, is so tiny that it’s hard to believe people once lived in such compact spaces! It’s only around 3 meters in diameter, making it the smallest of the trulli houses in town.
What makes this trullo even more interesting is that it was originally used as a shelter for animals or storage, showcasing the practical nature of trulli homes. Over the years, it’s become a symbol of the resourceful spirit of the people who built these homes. While it’s a tiny space, it stands as a reminder of the town’s humble beginnings and the ingenuity behind its unique architectural style. Visiting this trullo is a fun way to step back in time and see the creative ways locals lived!
ENJOY THE VIEW FROM A PANORAMIC TERRACE
One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of Alberobello is from above, and there are several souvenir shops in town that offer stunning panoramic terraces. These upper-level terraces provide breathtaking views of the town’s iconic trulli rooftops. As you take in the scenery, you’ll have the perfect vantage point to see the unique layout of the town and the surrounding landscape.
You can find these while strolling through Rione Monti, just look for signs that say “terrazza panoramica” or “vista panoramica da fotografare.” To access the terrace, you’ll need to make a small purchase at the shop—something as simple as a bottle of water or a small souvenir.
MAFFEI SGOBBA GROUP SOUVENIR SHOP – FAVORITE ROOFTOP
If you’re looking for a unique souvenir or simply want to enjoy some stunning views, Maffei Sgobba Group Souvenir Shop is a great spot to visit. Not only can you browse a variety of local crafts and trulli-themed items, but the shop also has a rooftop with incredible panoramic views of the town, this was our favorite! It’s the perfect place to take a break, snap a few photos, and soak in the beauty of Alberobello’s iconic conical roofs. The combination of shopping and views makes it one of the most memorable stops!
ALBEROBELLO IN MINIATURE
If you’re looking for another great experience and a fun way to explore the town, Alberobello in Miniature is a unique place to see! This small-scale model is a detailed recreation of the Rione Monti district, the heart of the town, famous for its concentration of trulli. The miniature version perfectly captures the charm of the town’s iconic cone-shaped houses, offering you a bird’s-eye view of its distinctive architecture.
As you look at the model, you’ll be amazed at the craftsmanship that went into replicating the buildings and streets. It’s fascinating to see how the entire town, with its narrow winding streets and beautiful trulli, is reproduced in such fine detail.
For first-time visitors, this is a great way to get a feel for the layout of Alberobello before exploring it in person. It helps you understand the arrangement of streets, the placement of key landmarks, and how everything ties together in this charming town. Alberobello in Miniature is also a quick stop, so it’s a perfect addition to your itinerary without taking too much time away from your sightseeing. Alberobello is not just about its trulli—it’s also a great place to pick up unique souvenirs! While wandering through the charming streets, you’ll find many shops with local products. From handmade crafts, pottery, and jewelry to local food products like olive oil and wines, there’s something for everyone. The Rione Monti area, in particular, has plenty of shops where you can find gifts and mementos to take home. Whether you’re looking for a small trinket or a special keepsake, shopping in Alberobello is a lovely way to bring a piece of this beautiful town back with you.
RIONE AIA PICCOLA
If you’re looking to experience the authentic character of Alberobello away from the touristy spots, Rione Aia Piccola is the place to see. This neighborhood, situated on the southeastern slope of the town, gets its name from an ancient yard, “smaller” than another one nearby. Unlike the busy Rione Monti, Aia Piccola is mostly untouched by commercialization and has a more peaceful atmosphere, with over 400 trulli, many still inhabited by locals.
As you walk through its narrow lanes, you’ll notice that this district has preserved its traditional character, letting you see a real glimpse into the town’s history and daily life. Just remember to be respectful, as this is a residential area where people live and maintain their age-old traditions. Exploring Rione Aia Piccola lets you experience a quieter, more authentic side of Alberobello—perfect if you’re looking for a deeper look into this unique Italian town.
BELVEDERE PANORAMIC VIEWS
Located in the quiet Rione Aia Piccola neighborhood, this viewpoint offers a more peaceful escape vs. the more tourist-heavy areas. The small park, with its big tree and low stone walls, creates a calm, cozy feel. It’s the perfect spot for taking photos, relaxing, or just observing daily life in this historic town. Plus, it’s free to visit and easy to get to, making it a lovely place to take in the beauty of this special town.
SLEEP IN A TRULLO
If you’re visiting Alberobello, I highly recommend staying the night and experiencing the magic of sleeping in a trullo. It’s such a unique and authentic way to immerse yourself in the town’s charm! we stayed at Trulli Holiday Deluxe & Wellness, and it was such an unforgettable experience. The trullo was over 400 years old, but it had all the modern comforts you could ask for. The house was spacious, with an outdoor garden, hammock, lounge chairs, and even a relaxing jacuzzi to unwind in after a day of exploring. Plus, it’s right in the heart of the town, so you’re close to everything. They even included a free breakfast, which was a nice touch.

IS ALBEROBELLO WORTH VISITING?
In my opinion, absolutely YES! This unique town is often called a fairytale town and is one of the most popular destinations in the Apulia region, offering a one-of-a-kind experience with its iconic trulli houses and rich history. While it’s a top tourist attraction, I recommend visiting during the shoulder season for a quieter experience, as it can get really crowded in the summer. Stay overnight to enjoy peaceful evenings and early mornings, giving you the chance to fully appreciate Alberobello without the crowds. It’s definitely a place worth visiting!
