This gorgeous coat has an amazing atmosphere, a laid-back and friendly vibe, numerous picturesque lookout points, and delicious seafood! Expect many charming streets, a beautiful coastline, and a relaxed vibe—it’s hard not to fall in love.
I really suggest carving out a whole day to discover this resort town, where you can find a perfect mix of relaxation and fun. Stroll through the charming old town, unwind on the soft golden sand beaches, and take in the breathtaking ocean views—so many activities await! The best time to visit is during the sunny months when the weather is lovely and a refreshing ocean breeze adds to the atmosphere, making it absolutely perfect. If you’re searching for the ideal full day trip from Lisbon, make sure Cascais is the top thing to do on your list!
It’s no doubt that Cascais embodies the essence of coastal charm. The area has golden sandy beaches, steep cliffs, beautifully maintained 19th-century mansions, cobblestone roads, and vibrant, traditionally tiled Portuguese homes. The crystal-clear waters are also ideal for swimming, and I’ve experienced some of the best gelato here. The town center is also quite lively. It’s easy to see why day trips from Lisbon to Cascais are so popular!
TIPS BEFORE VISITING
GETTING THERE
If you’re driving, you should aim to arrive early to find parking. If you opt for public transportation, the train from Lisbon’s city center is your best option. The scenic 40-minute journey from Cais do Sodré is not only the most affordable but also the most convenient way to reach Cascais. For the best ocean views, choose a seat on the left side!
TIMING
To have a pleasant visit, plan to explore Cascais in the morning to steer clear of the crowds, especially during summer, a busy time of the year.
RESERVATIONS
Make restaurant reservations. Cascais has plenty of fantastic seafood spots, but they can fill up fast! If you have a place in mind, making reservations is crucial, especially during the busy summer season. The best restaurants fill up quickly, so booking in advance ensures you won’t miss out on the local flavors. Plan ahead to enjoy the best dining experiences!
PACKING
When planning your visit to this beautiful seaside town, the season will dictate your preparations. During summer months, it’s essential to pack the usual items: sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a beach towel. Additionally, bring comfortable shoes for walking and exploring the town, as there are many cobblestone streets.
HOW TO GET TO CASAIS
Getting from Lisbon to Cascais is surprisingly easy and enjoyable. You can rent a car and drive or take public transportation (train).
CAR
Driving is definitely more convenient and often faster than using public transportation. When you drive, you have the freedom to go directly to Cascais without worrying about bus or train schedules. However, one issue with driving is finding a parking spot in Cascais. Especially during the busy season, parking spaces are limited and can be challenging to find. Arrive early as there is a better chance of finding a parking spot.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
If you’re taking public transportation from Lisbon, you can hop on the direct train at the Cais do Sodré train station, which departs every 20 minutes and is close to the Lisbon city center. This train is called the “Linha de Cascais,” but you’ll need some patience before you board: it’s an inexpensive train service; however, it’s not uncommon for wait times at the ticket office and machines to be as long as 20 to 30 minutes. To avoid the wait, get the Lisboa Card, which offers free transportation within Lisbon and to Cascais, along with free or reduced admission to many of the capital’s attractions.
The train ride only takes about 40 minutes and is a scenic journey along the river and the sea. As you travel along the coastline, you’ll catch glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean, which creates the perfect mood for your adventure, and before you know it, you’ll arrive at Cascais train station.
GUIDED TOURS
If driving or taking the train isn’t your thing and you want a hassle-free experience, consider a guided tour from Lisbon. This option is also great for solo travelers looking to meet new people. The full-day tour takes you to Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, where you can stroll through the gorgeous gardens at Quinta da Regaleira. You’ll learn about the fascinating history of Pena Palace and explore its lovely gardens.
The tour also includes the Portuguese coast from Cabo da Roca to Cascais. Plus, you’ll have some free time to wander and explore Cascais on your own —everything is taken care of for you, including transportation and tickets. (click here for tour availability) However, if you prefer to spend the entire day in Cascais, this may not be your best option.
14 BEST THINGS TO DO IN CASCAIS
Once you arrive in the charming town of Cascais Portugal, you’re in for a treat. This historic centre is packed with things to do, and I could easily spend a whole day just wandering around. Here’s how I would recommend spending your time:
BEACHES:
First Thing – let’s talk about the beaches!! Cascais is home to some of the best beaches in Portugal, offering everything from golden sand and calm waters to dramatic cliffs and scenic coastal views. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing spot to sunbathe, a lively beach with restaurants and bars, or a place to try water sports, Cascais has it all. Here are a few great options to check out during your visit!
1: Praia da Rainha
Praia da Rainha, or “Queen’s Beach,” is one of the most picturesque spots in Cascais. This small cove, hidden between rocky cliffs, has golden sand and crystal-clear waters, and it has more of a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere than the busier beaches. Because it’s a smaller beach, it can get crowded quickly, so it’s best to visit early in the day to secure a good spot. This beach is one of my personal favorites and is ideal for those who enjoy beach-hopping. Come here in the morning to enjoy the serene environment, then head to other nearby beaches.
2-3: Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa
These two beaches sit side by side, forming the largest sandy stretch in Cascais. Located just a short walk from the town center, they are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and trying out water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking. The calm, clear waters make them an excellent choice for families and those looking for a relaxing beach day. Along the promenade, you’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite while enjoying the ocean views.
4: Praia do Guincho
If you’re looking for a more wild and adventurous beach, Praia do Guincho is the place to go. Located just outside Cascais, within a natural park, this beach is known for its strong winds and powerful waves, making it a top spot for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The surrounding sand dunes and rugged coastline add to its dramatic beauty, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Even if you’re not into water sports, it’s a great place for a scenic walk or to watch the surfers in action.

5: Experience the wonder of Boca do Inferno
Boca do Inferno, or “Hell’s Mouth,” is a stunning cliff formation located just west of Cascais, Portugal. This natural wonder has a deep cut in the rock and a unique sea arch created by the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean hitting the limestone cliffs.
Over time, the ocean carved out a cave that eventually collapsed, resulting in the dramatic landscape we see today. You can witness how land and sea interact, especially during high tide when waves crash forcefully into the rock opening, creating a captivating display of nature’s strength. The name “Hell’s Mouth” comes from the loud sounds and turbulent waters that look like a wide, fiery mouth.
This site is an impressive cliff formation where waves hit the rocks, making it a breathtaking sight. Spend some time here to enjoy the strong ocean waves—it’s a great place to take beautiful photos!
6: Lunch
After your stroll, it’s time to satisfy your appetite! Have a relaxed lunch in town or by the beach.
Another great place to have lunch is at Mar do Inferno, a local gem that is known for its delicious seafood. The restaurant has stunning views of the ocean, which only enhances the dining experience. I’m still dreaming about their grilled fish—it’s a must-try!
7: Discover Casa de Santa Maria
Casa de Santa Maria is a beautiful Mediterranean historic villa built in 1902 that is now a museum. Designed by Portuguese architect Raul Lino, it combines different architectural styles with stunning azulejo tilework, elegant arches, and antique furniture. The villa was originally a private home but is now open to visitors, offering a glimpse into Portugal’s past.
Inside, you’ll find beautifully decorated rooms, intricate wooden ceilings, and a charming chapel covered in hand-painted tiles. The villa is surrounded by lovely gardens with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, making it a peaceful place to explore. Located next to the Santa Marta Lighthouse, it’s a great spot to experience both history and the beauty of Cascais’ coastline.
8: Santa Marta Lighthouse
The Santa Marta Lighthouse in Cascais is a stunning landmark with its white tower, blue stripes, and red lantern, all set within the grounds of a historic 17th-century fort. Constructed in 1868, this beautiful lighthouse once skillfully guided ships through the Tagus River estuary and the lovely Cascais Bay.
In 2007, it was transformed into the Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum, providing visitors with a glimpse into Portugal’s maritime heritage. The museum features exhibits on the history of Portuguese lighthouses, the evolution of navigation technology, and the daily life of lighthouse keepers.
Beyond the exhibits, you can also explore the historic fort’s batteries, which offer breathtaking views of Cascais Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Guided tours are available, offering wonderful insights into the lighthouse’s ongoing significance in navigation. The cost for Santa Marta Lighthouse with a climb to the tower is €5.
9: Wander Through the Old Town
One of my absolute favorite parts of the trip was wandering through the old town center. The cobblestone narrow streets lined with timeworn buildings decorated with colorful flower boxes, quaint shops, and vibrant cafes have so much character. Each narrow alley had cute shops selling handmade items like pottery and jewelry. It’s hard to resist stopping at some of the cafes, where the aroma of fresh coffee mingles with the sweet scent of local pastries. The whole area is just full of history and charm, inviting you to get lost in its wonderful atmosphere.
10: Best Views of Cascais
If you’re looking for the best views in Cascais, head to the Pedra da Nau viewpoint—a hidden gem just a short 10-minute walk from the old town. From here, you’ll get breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Cascais’ rugged coastline. It’s the perfect spot to pause, take in the fresh sea breeze, and snap some incredible photos. Whether you’re visiting at sunrise or sunset, the scenery here is unforgettable.
Getting there is easy, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the path can be a bit rocky. Flip-flops won’t cut it for this mini adventure! The slight climb is totally worth it, offering a peaceful escape from the busier parts of Cascais. If you’re a fan of scenic coastal views, Pedra da Nau is a must-visit during your trip!
11: Castro Guimarães Museum
The Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães is a beautiful historic mansion that has been turned into a museum, giving you a glimpse into Cascais’ rich past. Originally built as a private home for the Count of Castro Guimarães, the palace is a mix of different architectural styles, with charming details like colorful tiles and grand rooms.
Inside, there is a collection of local artwork, antique furniture, and historical artifacts, including a rare 16th-century book that adds to the museum’s unique charm. Walking through the rooms, you’ll get a sense of what life was like for Portuguese nobility, while also learning more about Cascais’ history.
Don’t forget to check the opening hours before you go, as they change depending on the season. The cost is €5
12: Fortress of Cascais
The Fortress of Cascais, also known as the Cidadela de Cascais, is a historic site that once played a key role in protecting the town from invasions. Walking through its stone walls and towers, you can almost feel the history surrounding this coastal defense. Originally built in the 16th century, the fortress was used by Portuguese royals as a summer retreat in the 19th century, adding an extra layer of charm to its past.
13: Cidadela Art District
Right next to the fortress, you’ll see the Cidadela Art District, a creative hub filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and unique exhibits. It’s a great place to wander, discover local artists, and even pick up a special souvenir. The mix of old military history and modern art makes this area a must-visit in Cascais. Just keep in mind that the fortress is closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly to make the most of your trip!
14. Paredão de Cascais
The Paredão de Cascais is a scenic oceanfront promenade that stretches along the coastline, connecting Cascais to Estoril. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing walk, with stunning sea views, fresh ocean air, and a laid-back atmosphere. Along the way, you’ll pass by beautiful beaches, seaside cafés, and charming spots to sit and enjoy the views.
The walk is about 3 km (1.8 miles) and is mostly flat, making it easy for everyone to enjoy. If you’re up for a break, stop at one of the beachfront restaurants for a drink or snack while watching the waves. The Paredão is especially beautiful at sunset, when the golden light reflects on the water. If you love a good coastal walk, this is one of the best ways to take in Cascais’ seaside charm!
DAY TRIP TO SINTRA
If you’re staying overnight or for a few days in CasCais, consider taking a day trip to Sintra, its a fantastic place to go, especially since its only about 20 minutes by car. if you dont have a car and prefer to take public transportation, Both towns are also connect by bus, so you dont have to go back to Lisbon.
Palácio Nacional da Pena
If you are staying overnight or for a few days in Sintra, a visit to Pena Palace is a must! This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the main attractions in the area and offers a truly fairytale-like experience. The colorful castle proudly stands atop a hill, providing stunning views of the surrounding lush forests and the town below. Known for its vibrant blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline architectural styles, the palace feels like something straight out of a storybook.
As you explore the Palácio Nacional da Pena, you will be amazed by its intricate rooms, large terraces, and beautiful gardens. The rich history and stunning design make it one of the most iconic landmarks in Portugal. Whether you are a history lover or simply looking for breathtaking views, Pena Palace is sure to leave a lasting impression during your adventure in Sintra!
Quinta da Regaleira
A trip to Sintra wouldn’t be complete without visiting Quinta da Regaleira, one of the most mystical and enchanting places in Portugal. This fairytale-like estate is filled with hidden tunnels, secret passageways, and lush gardens that feel straight out of a fantasy novel. The Gothic-style palace is stunning, but the real magic lies in the grounds, where you’ll find lakes, towers, and the famous Initiation Well, a spiral staircase that leads deep underground.
Every corner of Quinta da Regaleira is packed with symbolism and mystery, making it a dream for explorers and photographers alike. Whether you’re wandering through the gardens or uncovering hidden paths, this place will leave you feeling like you’ve stepped into another world.
